Title: IPhone 5
Post by: mk7gti on 14 April 2013, 15:33
Does anyone know if we will be getting a cable to connect the iPhone 5 to our new GTIs?

This is a very good question. I remember with the mk 6 & the iPhone 4 my dealer gave me the lead on the day I picked the car up, hopefully this will happen again! I remember I had to request it though, will do the same nearer delivery day.

It would be so handy for charging and music play back.

You'll definitely get an iPod cable, but I'll bet it will be the old 30-pin type so you'll need a 30-pin to lighting connector to plug your iPhone 5 in.  I'm using the Apple lighting connector in my partner's Cooper SD and it works a treat with the old iPod lead.

The iPhone 5 cab,e is due this month. I emailed VW UK and asked the same question and that is what I was told, so I suspect at least it'll be here by the time you get your cars?

Will it be free?

When I bought my scirocco I got different types of leads so perhaps yes?

It was the same for both my of Sciroccos. I have just emailed VW to confirm. I'll keep you posted.

In the past I had both a USB and an iPhone cable supplied with the car at no extra cost.

I got this supplied as standard with my Scirocco (USB and 30 pin iPhone 3/4 cable).

Lets hope they've moved with the times and supply the new lightning connector - without having to use an adaptor!!!

I hope so too, but then they would have to supply a USB cable, a Lightning cable, and a 30-pin connector cable for pre-iPhone 5 models. Could VW afford this?

The pricelist says "includes iPod connection cable".  I'm sure your dealer would swap for a USB if the iPod one was no use to you.

Ginge 35Edition - that's good news about the new lightning cable, I didn't expect to see that for years!

Had a call from VW UK today to state there will be no iPhone 5 cable until the end of October / November at the earliest.

Makes you wonder if VW even know what a Lightning connector is.

Does this imply then that they will still supply the iPhone 4S/4 lead and that we'll have to supply the lighting adaptor? If this is the case, surely the dealer can order in the adaptor at their own cost?

I feel a £25 outlay coming my way http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter)

To be fair, it's not just VW - there are only a handful of lightning connector products out there - more than 7 months after the iPhone 5 was announced!

I'll dig out my old email and see if I can call their bluff, because that ain't what they told me!

I've asked VW via their twitter account (who have been very helpful thus far); they say they are working with Apple to bring us a iPhone 5 lead but stop at being specific re: time frames. Indeed, they finish by saying contact your dealer. I've pushed them to give me an answer on supplying the lightning adaptor if an actual lead isn't available, ill let you know what they say.

Here's VW Uk latest response:-

"Thank you for your recent contact in relation to the availability of a connection for the iPhone 5. Please accept my apologies for the delay in my response.

Our Accessories Team is working closely with Apple representatives in order to develop a connector which is compatible in our vehicles. As soon as this product has been developed and tested to our satisfaction, it will be available to purchase through our Retailer Network. No specified date has been released of this product.

I would recommend keeping in touch with the Parts Team at your local Volkswagen Retailer who will be happy to keep you informed as to the availability of this accessory."

Cheers
