Just want an insight to what the mk4 golf v5's are like. Was looking at getting a gt tdi but come across some really clean v5's.
Typical problems
Things to look out for when buying one
Mpg ( roughly 32 mpg google reckons ) but would like opinions from people who have them
Anything in general you guys might be able to help me with as i dont want to jump into something and regret it.
Thanks

stay away from a v5 then mate either get a 1.8t or v6 if you dont mind the fuel cost

He was asking about them..not telling us about typical problems...

Seen one down here last week, 1250. It went quick..as in sold quick..not to me I might add.. I still have the stupid problem making GTi

Fuel costs arnt a problem as i dont do mega miles i was just going to get a tdi as i have a 20vt in my mk1 golf.. Come across a v5 but just wanted to know if there prone for going wrong or weather there quite reliable.

I have had 2 prefer the sound and feel but 22 mpg hurts hence I have a 20v turbo  They suffer with misfires and clutches are prone to going. If you are not worried about MPG then they are a great choice as cheaper to buy. GT TDI are excellent power and MPG I would have another tomorrow but you pay a premium for that. Good luck finding one

If you're looking at V5's make sure it's a 2001+ model.
Pre-2001 are 10v & 150bhp, 2001 onwards are 20v and 170bhp and are generally the better engine. Expect fuel consumption of around 30mpg with a light right foot, in comparison to a 1.8T is much more of a cruiser.
Cooling fans and MAF sensors are common faults
I would spend my money on a V6 personally
-
As Dom said get a later 170bhp as it is a much better bet and suffers a lot less engine issues.

Never driven a v5 ,but have to say i still like my 4mo ,even if the petrol does go pretty quick
-
Don't beat about the bush trav!
Get a r32
-
Go for a v6 mate. They not far off on mpg on the v5 and you have the 4wd and awesome sound
-
whereabouts are you in norfolk again mate, could always come out in my 4mo and see if you like it
-
if you want a V then go for the V6.
