Title: Sorting out my rust LoL
Post by: xionsolaris on 14 April 2013, 12:45
right here is my attempt at sorting out my rusty door sill its not to bad but it winds me up when I see it :P
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/708485d7-1c0b-4ce7-b2ac-082dadd5da69_zps55b66169.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/708485d7-1c0b-4ce7-b2ac-082dadd5da69_zps55b66169.jpg.html)

Right went to Halfords to get some goodies not sure how much it all cost but my traders card helped a little
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/80774e71-1199-4554-8b54-0acef6886774_zps1dc731ff.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/80774e71-1199-4554-8b54-0acef6886774_zps1dc731ff.jpg.html)

I don't recommend microfiber clothes as tacky pads are a lot better I had to spray my car outside as I wish I had a garage so I couldn't avoid the dust. Now I am really sorry but I forgot to take a picture of sanding it down to bare metal and then putting kurust on the affected area :P

Next I used some good old p38 filler to to make a nice and smooth surface so the rust wont show when I put on the primer and also it provides a protected layer here is my first attempt and putting some filler on
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/9c94c8bf-071d-404d-836f-357bd211294f_zps23100e16.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/9c94c8bf-071d-404d-836f-357bd211294f_zps23100e16.jpg.html)

Starting to sand it down I had to go back to Halfords as using wet and dry sand paper on filler to sand down the lumps was not working well I went to Halfords and for £5 you can get a project pack which contains the low grit yellow sand paper which is the best for first stages of filler all the way up to 1200 wet and dry right its all sanded down nice and smooth I couldn't feel any raised areas as this will show in the paint took my time and was pleased
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/14843067-563e-4275-b64e-5bbda8c66626_zpsa6253359.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/14843067-563e-4275-b64e-5bbda8c66626_zpsa6253359.jpg.html)
Had to put a tiny bit more filler around the edged area I used my finger to apply as it was  tricky place to apply to filler I sanded it down and began to prime with zinc primer which is apparently really good against rust

Cleaned all the dust of with microfiber cloth (not recommended but I am outside so cant avoid it) one thing I forgot to mention when I masked up the spraying area I tried to make a soft edge by folding the edge of the tape so that it allows a little bit of over spray to get under the tape and not to make a sharp but more noticeable edge
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/4a44dad6-6f34-499e-afe1-aa46ad174b9e_zps6517ddef.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/4a44dad6-6f34-499e-afe1-aa46ad174b9e_zps6517ddef.jpg.html)
After some sanding 600 + wet and dry between each coat 2 more coats later it looked like this
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/fb728f03-95a4-4918-9d8b-8a48120a674e_zps7403cae0.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/fb728f03-95a4-4918-9d8b-8a48120a674e_zps7403cae0.jpg.html)

Now for the colour coat nice dragon green my favourite colour I have sprayed a few things before with cans but it was only bodge jobs on a transit van just to hide a little rust lol now applied a couple of coats letting them dry in between I first used a light coat then began to spray a heavy coat to my luck no runs its now started look a bit more tidy
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/775e524b-f490-4937-b459-972c6dec7663_zps2bb048a1.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/775e524b-f490-4937-b459-972c6dec7663_zps2bb048a1.jpg.html)
I used a my girlfriends hair dryer to speed up the drying as it was getting late and it looked like it was going to rain I kept it on a low speed but high heat so it didn't blow away my newspaper that I had stuck down with masking tape right I sprayed on the laquer very lightly then began to apply a heavy coat finished product I am happy with

Now although it now colour match at the moment this is what it looks like finished
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/d185a443-6776-4f9b-8495-f1b4e31b7f7c_zps73f13767.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/d185a443-6776-4f9b-8495-f1b4e31b7f7c_zps73f13767.jpg.html)

Here is another pic the light was beaming on it so it has show a little bit of imperfections but it feels totally smooth and like the rust was never there
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a567/xionsolaris/c6dd845a-91ff-4015-be76-03c340a2b3df_zps1d1094cb.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/xionsolaris/media/c6dd845a-91ff-4015-be76-03c340a2b3df_zps1d1094cb.jpg.html)

I have let the paint harden and cure its been a week so I am going to pick up some compound to hope to blend it the where the new paint has ended and hopefully for a colour match I doubt it will match but its better than staring at rust thanks for viewing my thread its a days work but its worth 1 more side to go :P

Good job that buddy, mine also had a few scabs there as it seems the water gets trapped under the rubber seal... its important to keep on top of any signs of rust on a mk3 because they will take hold pretty quickly.

Thanks for the replys guys i take it this is the most common rust area on a mk3
Title: Re: Sorting out my rust LoL

Not the most common, mine was only rusty on one side! Arches are probably the most common...or the floor where the bungs are...or the front jacking points....hell a Mk3 will rust anywhere!

thank you for your reply mate it was my first time doing this as well I wish I had a dremmel as sanding it down with sand paper took ages I would say mask a area around the rust not to close to the rust as you will uncover a bigger area of rust so you don't scratch or sand past the area I ended up scratching a bit of paintwork were I didn't mask the area. Treat the rust with kurust and let it dry just take your time mate as patience is the key if you filling hasn't gone to well sand it flat and then re apply make sure you heat the spray cans as it sticks to the bodywork better I used a bucket and hot tap water warmed them up nice take some pics and post it on here mate would like to see you tackle your door as my arch has a little rust on it I need to sort out :P

That won't take too long to come back through I'm afraid. Never been a fan of filling over rust. Should have cut it out and welded a plate in.
