Hi all.
I'm currently fabricating a new iPad in to the MK2, the planning has gone well, but I'm a little stuck with the tech I need.
My objective has always been to use the following interfaces to make it work;
- Wi-Fi - A simple Wi-Fi tether to my iPhone to enable 3G access on the fly. I'm fine with setting this up.
- Lightning Connector - To a 'behind the scenes' dock, which has a switched 12v feed, and an audio-out to go directly to the head-unit aux-in. I'm also fine with setting this up.
And this is where I fall short on knowledge;
- Bluetooth - Connected to a bluetooth OBD-I *Dongle?* that will relay the information back to DashCommand.
Is there anyone out there (of course there is! :grin:) that can assist me with the correct tech that I will need to make this possible?

What I don't know is what from that list I will need to go between the BT on my iPad to the OBD on my 1988 Golf Mk II (19E, 1G1) 1.8 GTI Wolfsberg!
After some filtering, I have these choices;

Which are quite clearly marked as OBD-II, which I don;t think will do, but would love to stand corrected at this point!!
From within the app, I am looking at these settings, which I have no idea what they mean at this point in time!

I wouldn't mind a chat with someone who has more of a clue than I do when it comes to OBD tech and Bluetooth. The option exists to use WiFi if needed, as I can create the iPad->iPhone tether via Bluetooth, or I could even install some form of Apple TV in the boot to create an access point with air share etc.
Options, options, options!

I'm pretty sure the mk2 didn't come with OBD, so unless you've done an engine swap to something newer it's going to involve a lot of wiring.

Cheers Steve - This is what I was trying to ascertain. I think it was one of the 1st to have it, so read-outs would be basic, at best. Now, in a bid for the most novice question award *drumroll please*... How do I find out? :undecided:

It's a car, not a games console.
Do try and remember that the Golf2 was in production when 5 1/4" floppy discs were commonplace. :rolleyes:
If you want to pull data out of it then you're going to have to build your own sensors and data outputs etc. Of course if you installed an ABF then you could have your OBD port so you could put a POS iPad in it and display..... whatever it is you need over the engine's vitals already on the dash.

My opinion is i think a ipad would look out of place in a mk2 its one of those things were mk2s just look good as they are thete old cars and look good looking there age unless u was gona be some super show car with a custom leather dash and super cool interia it would look out of place i admire that youve set a challenge and want to complete it

Cheers all.
It was basically the fun in getting it done in time for summer, and to up-rate the audio at the same time. Alas, the connections aren't my bag, but the actual modding and installation would be a breeze.
I do however have my 2ltr Cordy with an ABF in it sat on the drive, just gone through an MOT. The plan was for it to fail and become a donor, but then the Golf sailed an MOT as well, so neither got amended.
I'll see how it stands next year when it's crapping it down with rain and I have nothing but time to play!
