Sat in traffic today and noticed the rev needle fluctuate and acting very lazy.
The other day i notcied the camcover had fresh oil marks on it. after it been on the motorway, since i'm replacing the breather pipes.
Shall i clean the throttle body out too, if so do i need to re-align it? ITS AN 8v gti AGG.
also shall i clean the maf sensor, with air sensor clean?

Yes clean the throttle body, no need to realign, that's for Mk4's onwards as far as I know. I've never had to realign mine and never had any trouble when removing it, which has been many many times.
-
I would advise using a new t.b gasket (only a couple of ££ from vw)
-
Clean the TB but don't expect any wonders :) might as well be the MAF sensor, so clean that too.
You can disconnect and reconnect the battery if you want to realign without using vagcom (if you don't have it, otherwise definitely use vagcom). reconnect battery and turn ignition, but don't start the engine. Don't touch the gas pedal or anything for 30 seconds or so (you should be able to hear it realigning). done.

oh, and also might be worth spraying some carb cleaner or tb cleaner into both ends of the breather hose.
-
I've always realigned mine when I unplug the TB, even if I don't remove it, but that's really personal preference since I have the software readily available.

Is yours 2E or AGG?
I've read only 2E need aligning, AGG don't.

B.t.w if cleaning the thottle body only use proper electrical cleaner (isopropol alcohol stuff?)
oh and I have never realigned the t/b (ady or agg models.. Maybe you need to on a 2e?)

Mine is neither, it's only a little 1.8 8v..

There's only one way to find out. Clean the damn thing

Cleaned my throttle body with proper throttle body cleaner and the MAF with electrical contact cleaner. Also got the throttle body re-aligned with proper VAGCOM.But then again mine is the ADY engine

Any difference in stability in idle with the MAF sensor cleaned? mine is still largely uneven (swings around 800-850 rpm when idling warm) after proper throttle body clean and breather hose change.. Thinking it's probably the MAF sensor or my broken lambda sensor . sorry if I'm hijacking OP's thread
