Title: Todays work on the dub
Post by: Ozz on 02 August 2005, 21:26
Well then, my gti has been running rather rough recently so I thought I'd treat her to a bit of a service, new spark plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, oil and finally got round to fitting the mk1 oil cooler I've had sat around for a good long while now.

This is the first time I've done all of these things myself with no one looking over my shoulder or on the end of a phone, so was very pleased when it all went together and still worked!

Unfortunately as soon as the oil had heated up it started leaking out of the oil cooler I'd just fitted!! I'm far from impressed and feel like taking a sledgehammer to it!!!!

Was not the best end to the day, I couldnt even take my car for a ride to see the improvement

Bummer dude...but look at it like this

You will have learnt from what went wrong this time and will be able to rectify what needs doing and will know what not to do next time.  its all a learning curve

I would look at it that way except that I dont think i really did anything wrong! Its just the oil cooler I put in was busted, and I dont think theres anyway I could have tested that

Ahhh well, I'll get it all sorted in the end, its just I'm stuck carless atm

Nevermind. Whip the cooler off and put it back to standard. Then take the cooler and get it re cored.

Would it be worth getting it re cored?  The thing only cost me a tenner to start with!

You could try and get another second hand one for a tenner but you run the risk of that one being faulty too. Its up to you.

youd be looking at £20-£40 min to get recored, i know there not big but alot of firms wont tounch 'peanut' money jobs. if your that keen to do it mate id buy a new one, at least you have a warrenty and stuff on it too, try www.eurocarparts.co.uk and see how much they are on there, then ask stuart in the deals/discounts section in the forum as youll get 10% discount on most items as youir a member of this fourm
may be a bit cheaper???

Cheers for the advice, think I'm gonna have a nose around to see if anyones got one second hand anywhere, if not I'll get it from gsf as theyre a tiny bit cheaper than ECP and I get discount through clubgti from them. Ah well, what a bugger, gonna have to go out and buy yet another 5 litres of oil, lucky my bank just extended my overdraft!!!
