Hi all, im looking for a bit of advise
my mk4 golf 1.6 packed in today, so been thinking about getting a mk4 gt tdi, are they any good? reliable? any problems to look out for? and is there a better engine code/type to go for? or ones to avoid?
Iv seen a really good condition 52 plate gt tdi 130bhp with 6 speed box, 120k for £1800
im guessing most out there now have quite high milage.
thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a good price. Make the cam belt has been changed, see if the clutch and turbo have been changed.
Do a quick search in this section and you will have loads of info on this subject.

Yes thanks for that, i have had a bit of a look through but to be honest people only post horror stories which is a bit alarming. Im sure they are good. One i have seen has been serviced about every 10,000 miles and had a timing belt 10k ago. looking through forum is it thrust barings that go in gearbox? or do the boxes play up? im geussing checking turbo is just looking for lots of smoke?

Boxes are on the hold fine to my knowledge. It is the cam issue, apparently more so on the 150s. Other than that you are looking at a clutch going after 120kish and the same with the turbo...

Gear box should be fine, as said its the cams, clutch/flywheel and turbo which are problematic and cost a bit. Everything else is just bolt on.
And yes you only hear about the problems on forums as that's what we're here to help with. Same as most things online you only here about the bad things..

all 130/150PD's have 6 speed gearboxes. :)
I bought my '02 150PD with 163k on it for £2000 in Aug 2012. Goes really well day in day out. The DMF started to chatter and I'd been told it still on it's original clutch so I got in early to change the flywheel. Turned out the friction plate had loads of 'meat' left on it. Now on 182k and still running the original turbo, etc. Drives really well and returns 50+ MPG on the computer. During my 110 mile drive to the Mrs's for the weekend I can get 64mpg on the computer at 50mph.
I love mine to bits. The PD engine is so nice to drive.

Bang on thanks for that. Im hoping to buy it in next couple of days.I had a golf 1.6 automatic that was given to me by my gran, and it packed in last week. Was rubbish on motorway as was only 4 speed, and reved its knackers off at 70mph and gave me a return of about 28mpg on a run. glad its gave in now so i can buy this gt tdi. My only consern was that i have a 110 mile round trip to work each day, and i dont want to buy trouble.
