Title: boomy noise
Post by: Andy76 on 09 April 2013, 20:09

Probably not the best description but around 45-50 mph I get a boomy noise. It comes from rear of car, almost like its coming from in the boot.

Its always at same speed when cruising, gear/revs and road surface make no difference, tyre tread is good (Bridgestones on standard Gti alloys).

If it was an older car i would suspect a wheel bearing but not sure if this noise is just a common thing/feature of a golf. Are wheel bearings prone to failure?

It needs to go back to dealer in coming weeks but after a month of ownership its a feature that is becoming a real annoyance. Would appreciate any thoughts

ps- its definitely not the stereo!

Tis a common problem with the mk5 and 6, it's caused by uneven wear on the inside of the rear tyres, also known as sawtooth effect or feathering, it's due to incorrect allignment sometimes from the factory but can also be caused by bumps curbs etc tends to get worse as the tyres get older, mines getting it a little now with 15k miles on the rears.

Ok i will have a closer look at the tyres. Its at about 18.5k

I will mention it when it goes in in a week or two for some warranty work, given i've only had it a month the dealer may be helpful

cheers

I was quoted £49 for a 4 wheel alignment at the dealers, might be worth asking?

Is the alignment on the back wheels adjustable on the GTI?

I will probably mention to them and let them diagnose it, dependant on the outcome I will push for them to correct it given I have only had the car for a short time.

Will report back in a week or two

That's a big difference in cost.  I'm considering getting my wheels aligned, potholes round here are abysmal and pretty sure they've taken their toll on the wheels over the winter.  Wonder what price my local dealer will pluck out of the air, and what exactly are you getting for the money?

Had mine carried out on a Hunter 4 wheel laser alignment machine for £65, £100 sounds expensive.

my last gti went in for service and I got a call saying one tyre had a bulge in the sidewall that was through potholes the worrying thought is I new when I did it but didn't check the tyres so if you have whacked one check them tyres

Let's just say it wasn't me that drove it through one of the city's worst potholes last week
The roads are so riddled with them, you literally have to zigzag down the road to avoid them
Car feels like it's very slightly pulling to one side so will get it checked.

You say Canterbury's roads are bad... Have you tried the back streets of Herne Bay??? Unbelievably bad! if we actually lived there I don't think we could live with the relatively hard suspension of the Gti/d.... Mind you.... Would have probably sourced one with ACC to begin with!
Sorry... bit off topic........... I'll get me coat.....

i think at the mo most of the roads in the uk are in a poor state of repair perhaps the manufacturers could design a pothole detector instead of adaptive cruise control maybe an optional extra I hope it warms up so I don't need me coat

Quick update- Diagnosis after visit to dealers is tyre wear. They won't do anything under warranty for it but on the upside are going to replace my centre caps and clutch!!!

For the sake of not confusing threads i will reply to another one I came across
