Look over this, it will give you all the information on what to look out for.

is the 1.8t? or the 2ltre? the later will have you begging for the 1.8t and the 1.8t will either have you crying for a trouble free car or screaming for more power
tbh though if its been looked after either way you'd be fine :nerd:
-
Thanks guys :D

loved all my mk4 golfs good fun and look fit but if your looking to be trouble free and keep money in your purse id steer clear lol i love my 1.8t but serious sick to death of fixing stuff no way i will be getting another :embarrassed:

dont see why people say that mk4s always go wrong, in 4 years of ownership the only things ive done are:
window regulator clips (fair enough vw should have made them metal not plastic, but the new revisions have this sorted)
exhaust (exhausts tend to go on older cars)
clutch clip (again vw should not have made them from plastic but i belive the new revisions have this sorted)
then usual consumables like tyres, break pads, bushes etc. out of all my mates i think ive had less problems with my golfs than theyv had with any of there cars.
good luck when buying :) *notice my sig* hahaha

Aside from the usual consumable parts in just under 2 years mine has needed:
MAF x2
N75 Valve
Thermostat
Temp Sensor
Door module x2
Window regulator clips x2
Boot lock
Which granted isn't a massive list but combine that with bushes, top mounts, brakes etc. it feels like its a money pit
-
aircompressor
fan belt
cambelt+waterpump
CV joints both sides
clutch pedal reweld
2 new front tyres
brake pads and discs all round
new fuse box
...i think thats it though it may change by tomorrow MOT and Service AHHHH i am praying to the motor gods for a sail through lol

Buy my mk3 instead. Better than the lardy mk4 and I'm currently being robbed selling at its current price.
I used to own this car back in 2010, pined after a MK4, boutght a turbo... Hated it and bought this back lol.
Plus she's called princess. :-)
