I read so many threads about homes being broken in to just for the car keys, so I always keep my keys in the bedroom.

at the end of the day there's nothing you can do to protect your car against theft of vandalism. just make sure you have protected no claims bonus.

I would NEVER keep my keys in the bedroom..... After our Bora was stolen whilst we were asleep in bed it was used in an armed robbery some 50miles away - and we live in an ordinary suburban street - .... I am sooooo glad that we weren't woken up in the middle of the night with that gun pointed at our heads... It could possibly have pushed 'just having our car stolen' right up to 'attempted murder'!!!
If the scum want the car then let them take it..............
REMEMBER...        THEY DO IT FOR A LIVING....
DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU 'THINK' YOU'D DO IN A SIMILAR SITUATION, THEY'VE PROBABLY GOT IT COVERED!!!

By all means have the house alarmed (so they'd go on to the next house with a desirable car) and possibly have some kind of remotely operated fuel pump switch so they only get down the road until the car conks out..... But to think you'd be able to confront them and just function in a 'normal' manner having just woken up... I'm afraid you've been watching too much James Bond

Agree.  As part of my job I look after allotment sites which are broken into every other week - mainly for metal/ mowers etc.   They have been known to use metal burners to cut into steel shipping containers, dismantle concrete stores, remove the roof or ease out breeze blocks, unravel whole sections of metal fencing - to get to the stuff.

At the end of the day, take as many sensible precautions as you can but it is only a car and for me my family's safety is most important.

How about some of that plastic lifelike dog poo on the drivers seat?.... Would that put them off?? ....no.... yes??

Seriously though, it's got to be something either very obvious that would mean they'd have too much trouble to overcome - not something that just needs unlocking, because they'd get THAT key with the car keys! - or something unseen like the remote fuel pump switch............ On some of my 'older' cars I used to insert a hidden switch to the distributer wiring, no amount of engine turning would start it!

Gsm tracker
Gsm home alarm with panic buttons that phone certain people....
Locked driveway gates.
Garaged when at home.
Steel reinforced security doors front and rear of the house (look like normal doors)
Windows all laminated glass tripple glass and alloy reinforced framed.
Keys in a safe for GTIs other keys round house so hope if they get in they take the SEATs...
Extra security on the garage door.
Security sensors that sets off a buzzer in the house.

I'm going to add cctv don't know why we did not do this when we built the place.
Also going to add electric powered/locked gates and a higher security fencing.

OMG, that should deter the most dedicated robber, unless you're unfortunate enough to get the thief with a fetish for the shall, we say ahem, larger lady.

Depends if you want your car back or not once some scroat has abused your car to within an inch of its life.....personally I would hope it was shipped or burnt once stolen and I never saw it again.

My car being ex-demo has a tracker on but I never carried on with the subscription as my insurance were not interested in knocking anything from the premium. If it did get stolen  and the police know it has a tracker on and they request it to be activated once more, surely Tracker are obliged to help,I often wonder this.I refuse to pay the subscription to aid my insurance as any damage once the car is returned and my no claims would be lost anyway, might as well get a new car.

Protected no claims, GAP and then a big dog!

Is Protected No Claims actually worth it?

I was told by a broker years ago its only valid if you stay with the same insurer and they up the price every year anyway hence why it pays to move to a new insurer every year. Then if you do move you have to declare you've had a claim anyway!!

Things may have changed since then though!

I wouldn't bother with the big dog thing , a couple of tooled up thieves will kill the dog in less than a minute ;)

Unless your gonna get several big dogs of course , but then your house will stink.

A decent house alarm and lock the keys in a safe is my advice !

And a good thief will find and remove a tracker no prob. Waste of money .

A decent house alarm and lock the keys in a safe is my advice !

Keys in a safe and/or by the side of your bed is asking for trouble..... Personally I'd rather just let them find the keys downstairs and be away with the car than wake me up threatening who knows what for the safe combination!
A house alarm is obviously a good idea as they'll move on to the next house....... Having said that, when my Bora was stolen I spoke to Martin Samson (of Sanspeed) to warn of thieves in the area and he told me his house was burgled on a bright Sunday afternoon by the scum throwing a brick through their patio door.... House alarm ringing, they ransacked their bedroom, stole jewelry and made off with Martins BMW...
