Ohhhhh how difficult is this!!!!!!! Do I need to undo the bleed nipple to make it easier?????? I'm using a proper rewind tool!!
It won't budge!
-
Is it off the car?
If you undo the bleed nipple fluid will piss out I think.
Weather it is on or off the car a rewind tool would be handy, other wise try a G clamp if you have one and a can of man up.
-
Leave it on the car just undo one bolt and flip it up.
DO NOT use a G Clamp on a rear caliper. You may find it easier to get it turning first with just one part of the tool before putting the plate in place.
-
I done one side after this thread, thought woop woop next side shouldn't e a piece of piss...haha how wrong was I!
Was all goin well, until the tool slipped...broke a brake line! Oh and I think I need a new calliper...think this one is seized!! Previous owner must of been a clown!! Either that or a cowboy!!!
-
I swear one caliper was left hand thread when I did my rear brake pads.

Yep!
-
Is the handbrake lever on the caliper stiff as hell too?
-
Yeh one of the pads is down to metal the other isn't, piston was barstool to wind back! Gonna get a recon one I reckon
-
I'm having issues with one of my rear calipers sticking too, gonna try a strip and clean first.
-
I'm not sure what to do...how do I go about sorting out a new brake pipe...and how do I fit it?? Is it a garage job...it'd have to be trailered away...arghhh

This is what happened when I wound it back...the seal twisted and come out...I know it shouldn't to that..
I'll buy a recon calliper and recondition this one as a spare...it's all a learning curve :-/
-
Take a trip to your local dealers and have a chat with the guy at the parts desk! If you're savvy with a spanner, a refurb kit for your rear calipers is around 30 quid from big red.
-
As for the brake pipe, take it off at next connection and keep the shape as it comes off.
I took mine somewhere local and they made me a new one while i waited.

You need that (or the other side)
Easy job but you will need to bleed the brakes.
PS you did have the fluid res cap off yeah ??
And you can buy a new seal kit on ebay for £10 ( i have just done all my rear ones)
-
Sound!!!!
That's not as bad as I thought! I thought it would be from master cylinder back...how does connect...
-
1 x 11mm bold just under the rear bear , and then a 13 mm banjo fitting on the caliper. Easy to do m8. follow the hard brake line to the bolt , but you will see when you get the part. douse the old bolts in wd40 or such like before removal, and use a proper brake spanner if ya have one
-
Brilliant! Not got a brake spanner..will a normal one do the job??
-
yeah, just more prone to rounding off, as the line is being replaced anyway you can chop it and use a socket.
-
Never bled brakes on my own...is it difficult? What about the ABS..does This make it more difficult?
-
as long as the system does not run dry (it shouldnt) you shouldnt need to worry about ABS pump. get a one man bleeding kit (eezibleed is good , under a score) follow this order : Rear Nearside,Rear offside,Front Nearside,Front Offside, master cyl nipple 1 (closest to headlights, master cyl nipple 2.
Bleeding can be a bit of a pain tho . Get about a litre of fluid at least.

lots of guides about.
-
Thanks mate! You're a diamond!
-
any luck today then m8 ?
-
Bought a new caliper today, also a new brake pipe, the 11mm union was a nightmare to get off, so ended up bending the bracket, got it off tho, just got to bend it back, then put all back together, then bleed the system... :undecided:
Hopefully will have all day tomoz on it. Hoping get it back on its wheels tomorrow!
Fingers crossed
-
ah well, should be back on the road soon then

Does this look right?? The union won't go in any more!!

The new union has more thread than the old...should be ok right??
-
you will know as soon as you start to bleed , but think it looks ok
-
This wasn't ok...pissed brake fluid out when attempting to bleed the pipe....the new union had 4 or so extra threads..so although the union was tight, the pipe wasn't tight up against the other side...that's what you get for buying non genuine parts..so back to VW for a genuine part now...tried to,save money..ended up costing more now :-/ oh well you live and learn
-
did you get the pagid ones from ECP ? I have them on mine with no probs ?
-
Yep I did...I did notice the union tho didn't I. It's ok, I'll see how the VW one does..can't see why it shouldn't
-
rear brakes are a nightmare m8, hope you get it sorted
-
May well be the photo but that thread looks a little on the wonk....
-

Yeah, does look a little cross threaded :undecided:
-
Yeh, it's just the photo angle, I did make sure it wasn't crossed threaded...haha..can't believe all this started with replacing rear discs and pads...ridiculous lol
-
If it's definitely not cross threaded, are the ends the same type? Should be if it was specific for the car. Pagid are a very good brand. Iit might need a bit more tightening. Check threads are totally clean and straight as a first step though.
-
It won't go any tighter, when I realised this I put the old union next to the new one..and like I said, there are 3-4 more threads, VW want £18 odd for one, so gonna give that ago.
I know it's not cross threaded as I checked, i put the old pipe back on, and it tightened up perfect.
Wish I'd never started this now lol

I'm just struggling to see that Pagid who make the vast quantity of braking parts for VW would cock that up. Also number of threads shouldn't make a difference as it will just have threads sticking out, won't stop the ends from going in. If anything less threads would make it leak, not more.
It may have more threads but that can't be the actual issue, must be the wrong shape end or something like that.
