Title: Is this something to worry about??
Post by: MBCGTI on 04 April 2013, 17:05
Washing my car yesterday, not a decent job just to get all the salt off and thought I had curbed one of the wheels.  Washed it and used some proper wheel cleaner and noticed it wasnt coming off but its not curbed.

It looks like it is underneath the laquer, I have done a bit of research and think it might be the onset of 'white worm.'  Has anyone else had any experience of this and if so does VW sort it out?  It only seems to be one the rear offside wheel, its not curbed and in perfect condition, although mine is second hand its still under warranty, do VW replace wheels or will they have them reconditioned?

Sorry about the picture quality its taken from my phone.

It's occurred on 2 wheels.

If your car is in its warranty and the wheels came as a extra from the dealer then you shud have no problem in getting them replaced under warranty...as long as the wheel(s) in question are in a none curbed state..

There's been plenty of wheel warranty claims which have been successful...

I still have 12 months warranty left so I think I will leave it for at least 6 months until claiming.By then the wheels hopefully will show the white worm more prominent, making a claim easier. It is going in for a service soon so I will make the dealer aware of this issue.

Good idea, just make sure you don't curb them in the mean time otherwise your be stuffed...

I have to admit it doesn't look like white worm? it looks more like polish dust.

They replaced this wheel under warranty.

I had a recent issue and was advised by Jimble to clay the wife's cab wheels, tried it and it did the job.

Recently had some break dust on my wheels and followed Jimble and Ginge's advice and it did the trick, so I would try that first.   Doesn't look like white worm to me either.

To be honest it was only a quic clean job to all the salt off so didn't even use any wheels cleaner or clay. Might try it before going to VW, to be honest shouldn't be a problem as I know the guys that run the VW garage so hopefully shouldn't have to argue too much.
