Title: Brake bleeders
Post by: thai-wronghorse on 03 April 2013, 14:16
With my mk3's MOT at the end of  the month and the fact it struggles to stop over 3mph  it's about time i overhauled the braking system.
The fluid has never been changed since ive owned this one and ive got some braided hoses to chuck on anyway along with new pads and front ABS sensors so bleeding will be necessary.
Ive used the cheapo one way valve and tyre pressure bleeders before but want something a bit better this time so was wondering if any of you guys had any recommendations that won't break the bank?

I had one of those several years ago but thought there might have been a better alternative on the market now that didn't need a remortgage.

I used something similar to this when I replaced my rear beam !

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_204703_langId_-1_categoryId_255216

Worked well and cost effective.
Remember bleed the one furthest away from the brake cylinder.

Good Luck.

That Gunson kit is brilliant. Bought it in a local shop on a job for £15 quid and seriously impressed with it.

No need to bleed ABS as long as you keep fluid in it. If just doing lines create a seal on the reservoir so that it creates a vacuum and go for it.

if you have abs.. bleed the brakes with the engine running..

When I worked for vw.. the old boys always swore by it...  and to be honest I have always just done it..

well from what I remember the abs pump only runs when the engine is running. so iut stops air locks in the abs pump... but I suspect its the old boys being safe that sorry...

Well after some research the majority of people are saying to NOT have the engine running,  apparently its completely unnecessary and just creating more risks whilst work under the vehicle.
