Title: the bastard sump !
Post by: welshdean on 02 April 2013, 17:37
Hi all,

I've decided to try and take my sump off today to replace it.
I undone all the bolts around the edges and the three large bolts where connecting to gearbox.
But inbetween the sump and gearbox is 4 more 10mm bolts which are a right f**king nightmare to get to.

Well when I was trying to undo the f**k*rs the socket dropped down inside and cannot be retrieved . It's not fully in the sump or fully in the gearbox. It's stuck in the recess somewhere of the sump moulding.

My question....

As I can't get the sump off because of two rounded bolts , is the loose socket likely to caause damage to the gearbox ?

Or does the gearbox have some protection from all sides . Because I can't get the socket back

mate i wish i lived in cardiff to watch you tinker about lol

i'd leave well alone until you either manage to get the bolts undone or  drill  the feckers out  :lipsrsealed:

EDIT:

where is the socket, inside the sump?

You need a ball headed allen key to take them out.... With regards to dropping the socket good luck i done the same took about 45 mins to dig it out i refused to take the same off again to get to it !

go to your local DIY and get a telescopic flexi claw, its about a 10er and works a treat at grabbing things

I did the same thing, think you will find its on a mounting bracket, not in your sump.

You can undo the bolts with a 10mm socket on one of those things that lets you undo bolts round corners, can't remember the name of it! Elbow extension???

Don't take my word that it's not in there though, don't want to be liable for any damage

Well I got a funny feeling that it's not actually in the sump as such but on the outside stuck in the weird shape moulding part. But my concern is whether or not it can actually get into the gear box atall ?

Is it not a U.J (universal joint)?
