Title: engine mayo
Post by: GTi_James on 02 April 2013, 09:34
morning all,

got an issue with my car making its own brand of mayo in large amounts, as in the dipstick has a nice thick coating when i check the levels.

any ideas? have run redex oil cleaner through the system and is due a service by the end of the month, should i wait until after the service to see if oil change makes a difference? i also use castrol GTX

any help would be appreciated fellas :)

Have you got water injection and a catch can? as my water injection causes my catch can to fill up quite quickly and when full, I gets the same thick creamy substance build up in the dipstick tube.

Check oil cooler as water could be getting in the oil another thing are u only driving short distances as condensation from quick journeys can do this can u take pick of wht it looks like

....say'whaa? lol its a AUM, catch can is emptied once every 2months, thinking at service im gonna get them to change over the sump for the steel bottom conversion or should i just get the pick up cleaned and wait till i go lower for the sump conversion?

i had the pressure test done and no issues with HG, oil is somewhat black on the dipstick end so wondering if i should run some more redex oil cleaner through before the service at the end of the week so that its as clean as possible for when they do the oil change

i do short journeys but will be doing before and after picks this saturday as i am going south of london to pick up a goodey :)

Short journies wouldnt cause the dipstick to cream up.. thats a LOT of water to do that!

Even with the pressure test i wouldnt trust it and wouldnt rule out HG.

Doing short journeys will cause this or worst case would be HG but as u said u have had this checked :)

the thing is though that all pipes are sealed, no moisture on the oil filler cap, maybe oil filter change and pick up pipe clean could clear this issue  :undecided:

Only other thing is a cracked head? Lost any power at all? Overheating?

How many miles u av per day?

Shirt journeys may cause condensation in the cap, but very rarely in the dipstick area

averaging about 35-40 miles a day. no power loss, normal boost to 10 then drops 1-3 bars on cruise, has felt lumpy the last week but only infrequently, could possibly need a TB clean regarding that, getting all Temp and O2 sensors renewed.

 :undecided:

im at a lost, i know cold weather plays avoc with engine sludge and mine sits pretty i'd say 80% of the day

i have noticed my dipstick has been pushed out a bit sometimes, probably poor fitting but it all came from vw

anyone got the part number for the AUM sump and pick up? i want to know whether or not i'll be bent over forwards at my local even though i trust him, may have to do it myself

Well i went to VW and paid £63 for a oil pickup, sealent and sump plug, oil and oil filter

if your dipstick is being pushed out there is a chance your sump is getting pressurised. Again possible head failure (remember cooling system is also pressurised) if you have a crack in the head or head gasket failure it would cause these symptoms. Short journeys dont cause dipstick mayo. only in the cap.

Get a cooling system pressure test done. Check to see if your coolant is leaking internally

but i havent had to fill up coolant since major service last year august with VW and have covered more than 10000 miles since then  :undecided:

as i understand heads arent too bad to do and may get a mate to help if it gets a bit nitty gritty though this could also be a chance for an AGU conversion maybe so that i can push more power through the Ko3s and not worry about the flimsy AUM issues  :undecided:

hopefully its just the short journeys and cold weather, i'll be checking the issue again saturday as i have a major trip, and yes i have break down service and a place it can be stored

none at all?

pretty much  :undecided:

could be mistaken but i can remember undoing that lid, i'll have to check now  if not then its a pretty good excuse for and AGU conversion with Ko3s, the engine is sound though and no smoke what so ever and only that annoying ticking from the carbon canister

engine flush and mark levels on expansion tanks and dipstick. then test for a few weeks and see what happens?

didnt think flushing was good for the engine though? i did have the old school pressure test done about early jan, i just found a reciept, came back clear, no discolouration at all

i would check your engine breathers see if anythings slightly blocked.

will do, may just change the standard silicone ones with the catch can to better ones tbh, its been nearly a year since they were done and may actually need a slean out tbh

Don't use engine flush on turbo engine very bad idea.

ok, nothing in compression tank, no smells, no smoke nothing, nudda, zilch, zero, nothing what so ever that has pointed to a head gasket so could this be down to short journeys and not much use over the last week?  :undecided:

i will be doing a massive journey this weekend so can up date whats happened etc

Could be the oil cooler failed, drain and refill the oil then bypass it (join pipes together) and see if it comes back.
