I've got a mk4 golf but will a newer golf unit fit a mk4 ? I.e mk5 stereo

No, well mine didn't anyway, the mk5 fascia is curved, the mk4 is square!  Maybe with a lot of modifying..but to be honest, the mk5 units Are gash for sound
