Gentlemen
I have just bought a 2008 model with 45000miles on it. I am told that it is time to change the CAM BELT, is this a DIY job for an average home mechanic?
Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't if it were me...haha..
If you feel confident, then carry on, but if you get it wrong..it's worse case scernerio..a new engine

Not sure if it has a timing belt, I have a 1.4TSi and that has a timing chain.

2.0 tfsi engines are simple to change as long as you have the facilities! There are 2 types, 1 has a 2 piece cambelt cover, which is the easiest of the 2, and the other a 1 peice cambelt cover which takes a mit of working to get it out. When i usually do them, i unbolt engine, gearbox and bottom subframe mount and shift the engine about an inch or 2 towards the n/s in 2 jacks (with big rubber blocks!) to give myself enough room, about a 2 hour job if you know your way around a set of tools.

I suggest you have this done by a professional - VW offer a 2 year warranty on parts and labour which is peace of mind considering the damage a botched DIY could do to your engine.
EDIT - It will also be better to keep the vehicle service history in line with the service schedule in your handbook. This will help you if/when you come to sell the car.

Do it yourself, don't be a sheep and go straight to the nearest VW dealers.
If you do go to VW don't forget the vaseline, it will ease the pain........

Thanks guys, you have given me a lot to think about.

Just find a good specialist or local garage you can trust, make sure they use a genuine or gates kit and it will be fine.
