Title: 19" wheels with pan sunroof ?
Post by: simonpolly on 30 March 2013, 16:25
Just been to the dealers to order my car, I have ordered a 3dr manual in sunset red with 19" wheels, pan sunroof, dynaudio, performance pack, colour display. The dealer can not place the order untill tuesday but he pointed out that the spec says that the 19" wheels can not be ordered with the sunroof but he is going to check with VW UK on tuesday, does anyone know if this is correct and why this would be the case  :undecided:

I have seen the above spec on the demo cars on youtube.

Not sure why, i remember someone asking about it with the mk6 cos that was the same in that you couldn't have 19's and the sunroof, i think it was something to do with kerb weight. ???

Im wondering if it has anything to do with the roof shattering, im sure i have read something about BMW sunroofs shattering  :undecided:

EDIT that was to do with changes in temperature

On a related note, i wonder how much extra weight the sunroof actually adds and how much it'll affect the fuel consumption?

Doubt it will make much difference.

I may have to lose the roof then and spec something else,i quite fancy the button for starting the engine but after seeing the video of the toerags stealing the BMW 's  i'm not sure.

The kessy system seems really good tbh, although the wheels would go before the roof on the 7!

This is a decent video of it in action:

Hi Simon
I have the start button on my Evoque as long as the key is somewhere in the car it will start no problem.  If you can't have the roof you want I would go with the button.

I nearly bought a Passat with a pan sunroof recently. If I was buying new, I'd have a roof over wheels. I'm not over struck on the current choice of VW wheels, so a nice set of BBS's could be fitted at a later date once your bank account has got over the shock of paying for the new car.

If I was putting in a order then it wudnt be without speccing the keyless entry, I had it in my Swift(before the Golf) and its probably the one thing I miss the most...to this day I still get in the GTD and just put the keys in my pocket then remember its key operated...

Hi stranger,i was more worried about someone stealing it without the key, BMW had a big problem recently  with car thieves they had a peice of equipment that enabled them to steal brand new BMW'S without the key  in a matter of seconds.

To be honest i was only going to get it because i liked the look of the sunroof meeting the windscreen,i have a  pan sunroof on my sharan which is nice for the kids but with air con its kind of pointless and noisy when open.

I quite fancied a sunroof as apart from the Mk2, I hadn't had one since 1999. As I said earlier, I was close to buying a Passat with one, In fact it had virtually every option on it possible, but the condition of the car fell well short of a so called approved used one.

I then considered an A4 Avant with one from TVS in Bridgnorth. That was a 3.0 TDI quattro, but my head ruled my heart on that one.

Ironically, I bought a boggo standard DSG Sport with no options what so ever. So I sill didn't get the sunroof that I would have liked. Still, I've got the Mk2 in the garage if I want to get buffeted.

I've still got the two Golfs in my sig pics, but the old Passat has made way for a Silver B7 TDI DSG Estate.

I had a similar message from my dealer today syaing we can't get both the 19s and the roof... Really disappointing. Thheres a picture of the GTI with both in one of the conventions:

But maybe thats Europe only or was the concept car or something?

Really hope this isn't the case...

Hi again
Hadn't heard that about BMW cars tbh, sounds like the new GTI will be a cracking car.  Wish you good luck with it.

I wouldn't hold your breath mate, you couldn't have it on the 6 and it does say in the 7 price list that you can't spec both together.

Doesn't the new Gti have an aluminium roof to lower mass and improve handling?

Why spoil a feature that actually makes the car better to drive by fitting a heavy sunroof?

I wouldn't bother with a sun roof on a 'sporty' car.

The pan roof on my dads crv is great and something well worth speccing but its a difderent type if car.

Well I just shot off to my nearest dealer as I know a couple of them personally hoping to get to the bottom of this issue, the dealers themselves are a bit baffled by it and my main dealer is hoping to hear back from VW by Friday as they too also have customers wanting to order this combo...

Makes me laugh those claims of 100kg lighter, i can't remember what the mk6 gti weighs but i remember my big fat MK5 R32 weighed 1521kg making the mk7 gti only 170kg lighter than that.

I'm sure Lee will be along in the near future to clarify the 19's & Pan roof combo....

I remember posting it way back when the 19 inch Glendale wheels became an option on the mk6. All to do with weight...... I would give up if it says in the price list you cant have it then you wont be able to convince then to re engineer the car.

Maybe retro fit the sunroof or wheels..........wheels might be easier to do though ; )

Just leave both boxes un ticked and the car will drive much nicer

Not the full on pan roof, but aftermarket sunroofs have come along way.
