Hello guys basically I'm sitting at the side of the road and either my clutch or gearbox has gone is there any way of knowing which it is on a dsg? Its making an awful noise when putting it into D and when it first went I thought a tyre had come of and I was running on an alloy that's how bad it was any ideas? Thanks

its all kind of built into the box, off the top of my head you have 2 clutch`s in the DSG, (same here) when was the last time you did an oil change on the gearbox, Try slipping it in manual and holding it in each gear or put in reverse, if that works ok then i would say the clutch is ok and you might find that one ring has gone? either way, if something has sheered and its scraping about the whole box will be pretty screwed by now and it could risk a jam and all f up and you will need a new one i would imagine. Do you have warranty cover? Its the one flaw of the DSG.. its price.. good luck.. IF you are lucky, you might be able to get it picked up on a lorry and have the thing services and the box emptied and any bits might come out in the oil. let us know how you get on

Thanks for the reply, I got it back from Vw yesterday turned out it was the driveshaft that had gone so that along with 2 new cv joints that were also damaged or so Vw say it came to £556 which I was so relieved to pay considering what it could of been. I just can't believe how bad the noise was for it just being the driveshaft but now runs sweet as again. The gearbox has been serviced twice and it's on 77k so I would of been so annoyed had it been this. Thanks again for the reply

As long as its serviced, the DSG box is a tough bit of kit. The only thing I have read about going wrong on it was the mechatronic unit, but this usually goes early in its life.

yer, the DSG is a worry, i have taken one of them "WarrantyDirect" things, i know its rubbish for most bits and bobs but i made it very clear that i want the DSG covered.. and they do, i made them mark it in the writing so there is not argument later. . £130 a year.. im on 93K so kind of worth it i think.. But i have serviced it to the clock and have a full VW service stamp history so i think i should be ok!!
Bet your happy it was the drive shaft.. i think i would have cried with joy!! lol
Take it easy..
