right guys purchased a new car last night and the owner was good enough for me to take full logbook with me, i have filled out the part where we are the new owner of the car my number plate is on retention and i have all the paper work can i take logbook and my retention form and put the private plate on the car aswell as change of ownership all at same time rather than sending logbook off waiting for it to come back then going and putting my plate on surely i can do this all at same time at my local dvla office

The seller has actually broken the law, by allowing you to take the whole registration document and not sending it (excluding new keeper section) to DVLA. I would send off the larger part of the reg doc and then take the new keeper section of the V5C (reg doc) along with your other docs to your local VRO, they will process things while you wait. I know because i did this myself 2 weeks ago.

so if i take just the new keeper part, tax disc and mot and also my retention document to my local office will i be allow to put my plate straight onto the car
-
also do i need insurance certificate
-
Yes all the docs, including insurance. It was all completed within 5 minutes and new tax disc issued.

Never taken insurance to dvla for a registration change - cos as soon as u transfer it's invalid anyway

Quote extract - If either vehicle needs taxing
You’ll also need to enclose:
a completed V10 ‘application for a tax disc’
a certificate of insurance or valid cover for the vehicle
-
is doesnt need taxing though mate it already taxed mate
-
Key part of that,
" If either vehicle needs taxing "

I must have missed where you stated that it was already taxed in the original post. Just thought it would save you a wasted journey to the VRO if they asked for insurance certificate and you didn't have it.
