This, but you'd have to take a paper bag with you to pick it up so no one would see you drive it back

Fook what it looks like.  I can't stand it when people list a car with no MOT because they can't afford it yet state they don't think it would fail on anything.  With an MOT it would make more money back and then help him with his money issues!

Lets face it, you're potentially looking at a car hiding rot, and he doesn't want to tell you.

171bhp .

I'm sure i have read previously that 16V GTi standard were round about that figure BHP. But when the VR6 was introduced they put down on paper that a 16V gti was 150BHP standard, so it don't damage the sales of a VR6 apparantly.

My mate was telling me ages ago that some 16V owners have had they car on dyno's and its been over 150BHP standard.

What do you think is it true?   :undecided:

even so that engine has done near 200k and would have lost horses along the way.. to be 171 now it would have had to have been 175-180 new!

Good point, Who knows what the crack is with these engines.

I think it'll remain a mystery

there are fewer and fewer on eBay now, it's hard to find a decent 16v mk3 these days I think. I'm hanging on to mine until the end!

There is one other way. Track down the owner of the 16v ann, that was on here for sale that had done 35,000 miles from new. And ask him to put it on dyno.

Would love to see that

A lot of VW engines have been proven to have more BHP when loosened up with a few miles. Quite how true 171 is I'm not sure.

Khare and VR6_Wherry both had decent results with a few miles on the clock near enough standard AFAIR.

Such a shame! At some point he must have woken up and thought "i know, lets go out and buy some orange paint, that will look good on my green car" then after painting one thing orange must have thought "that looks great, the more things i can paint orange, the better this will look"!!!

no 16v engine has ever made 171bhp with a cone filter and some wanky ht leads. you're talking head work, lairy cams, zorst custom intake to achieve that figure

Or the good old "it will only take a few quid to fix" line..... Spend a few flapping quid then
