I have two problems with my golf atm! First off I have noticed a tapping sound that wasn't there before and have found where it is coming from:

Is it normal for this part to tap? What is it?
And secondly since having the gearbox oil changed a week or two ago when the car is first driven in the morning etc. from cold it is hard to get into second gear. When it has warmed up its fine. Reverse 1st 3rd 4th and 5th are all good! Does this sound like clutch, selectors maybe gearbox? :(
Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you've got the wrong gearbox oil grade. If you supplied the oil, check the grade. It should be 75w-90. If the garage supplied the oil, ask what was put in. Wrong oil can not only make shifts slower and harder but also damage the internals.
Regarding the tapping, that's the carbon canister. You can either leave it in place tapping away or remove it completely and block the pipe that goes to the throttle body, leaving the one from the fuel tank open to vent.

I'm pretty sure the oil used was Carlube EP75w-90 semi synthetic so is my mechanic he is going to check tomorrow! So the carbon canister will not cause any problems?
Also if the oil was correct then what would be peoples next thoughts?
Thanks for the advice khare :)

The oil was defiantly correct, Think I have this solved now.
The car goes into gear easier when warm although its noticeable that even once warm the gear selection is becoming worse. I had a though that the reason second gear was hard to select was the pressure plate was on its way out and was stiff but loosening up when hot.
Thought I'd test the clutch by booting it a little on the way home today. It took one short burst of acceleration in second gear and the car was stinking of clutch -.- New clutch Monday!
-
Hmmm Clutch changed but still a stiff second gear however new symptom to update! Ill list them so its easier to follow!
1. When the cars just started/cold whilst driving/moving it is hard to get into 2nd.
2. When the car is started cold and stationary/not moving its goes into every gear fine including second! :s
3. When the cars warmed up moving and stationary its 'fine' into all gears
4. Even when it is warm when changing into second it feels as though the gearstick is bouncing off things as you go into second.
So confusing all the gears seem to be fine no weird smells noises whilst driving in them just hard to get into second when cold and moving.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks rich.

Stretched gear shift cable or shift tower components?
p.s. I could just be a storm grey valver curse as mine does it when cold as well.
-
Worn syncro in the gear box?
-
Also since having clutch changed when inside the car I can now here a tapping sound (not from the carbon canister) the sound is coming from the front bottom left corner area of the car :(
Noticed this earlier when having a look could this cause the tapping? Is this meant to be screwed all the way in? (red circle)

Nice to see the clutch fitter put the driveshaft bolts in nice and tight. I think I'd be back at that garage pulling them up on the loose bolt found and tapping noise.
-
Just found out this is the driveshaft -.- Two bolts are loose, the one you see in the picture and the other one is wound up but still loose! Guessing its not safe to drive like this... I rely on this car for work spoke to the mechanic taking it there for them to be tighten tomorrow will now have to get up ridiculously early and get the train to work!
Any knights in shining armour with a spline tool wanna come help me out? Im in Upminster Essex :(
-
Managed to find a car shop that's open till 10 7 days a week last night. Bought the required tools tighten all 6 of them as they were all loose! By loose I mean hand tight!! Disgraceful!
Save to say won't be using or going to garage again, Tried to tell me that they loosen themselves sometimes but I don't believe all 6 would have it has obvisoly been overlooked!
Also ordered some new gearbox oil so will update on if that changes things, thank you for the advice guys!

Name & shame the cowboys!
-
lucky they didn't shear off!!! that's the common cause for daage to the cups..
what gearbox do you have? I have a spare 8v one going cheap.. although I think its different :(
-
It's an 02A /16v gearbox.
-
Ill check the code later as its a 91 box but im pretty sure they are different.
-
What a bunch of jokers
Trying to fob you off by saying 'they loosen themselves off' is absolutely disgraceful! Clearly they have never heard of a torque wrench!
I would take the car to a reputable garage and have them check and retorque every bolt that is touched during a clutch change.
-
Even sensible people can forget to torque up bolts!
-
driveshaft bolts are one of those I use thread lock on!!!! lol
-
Whats the cups?
I've changed the gearbox oil with some decent oil and now it goes into gear fine regardless of whether its cold hot or moving! woo!
However theres still a tapping sound coming from somewhere its driving me mental cause inside the car you can hear it but when I poke my head under I haven't got a clue where its coming from!
I'll have to wait till Friday till I can pay someone to have a look at it as I'm skint! Anyone got any ideas?

Tapping sound was a gearbox mount left yep you guessed it loose...
