Had car on jack recently (flat front driver side tyre ) it crumbled...
Took it to auto shop, he said it wasn't too bad but a little corrosion around that area, he showed me the length of it on ramp it sort of looked clean to the naked eye underside of car looked pretty decent AFAIK but I don't know what I'm doing. But I can't jack the car now and I also wonder about the integrity...
Say it's just a small area around jack point, is that likely an MOT fail???
How long would the sills last if left that way.. or if I have a patch welded in (he quoted £200 both sides) how long would that extend life expentancy... ?? I also think I will have to buy a trolley jack and avoid using the sills. Can a novice do this?? I can see that not being ideal in busy traffic..
Alternitively, I may sell it.. it's a very nice P reg Golf 1.8 SE dark blue with GTI trim with sunroof in very good condition with 95k on clock and history etc, starts every time, original 14" alloys could do with refurbing.. what's it worth..??
Sorry for all the questions.. I have limited funds and don't know what to do :undecided:

there is another thread here about someone who needs to replace sills.... just go down, say 5 threads ;)

This is a common issue with the mk3, invest in decent trolley jack as they are much safer and very easy to use and avoid jacking on any of the sills or underbody panels, best places to jack a mk3 are under rear subframe mounting points just behind and to the front of the rear wheels and under the front subframe or front engine mount behind the radiator.
-
To be honest a mk3 without crushed front jacking points is a rare sight lol. If its only surface rust just try straightening it out, grind of the rust and seal it up. As for whether its an MOT failure it depends on the garage...

Mine doesn't have any.... :smug:

My sills are looking a bit worse for wear lately so come the summer I'm going to have then completely redone. Last night I needed all four wheels off whilst I was painting my calipers so I hacked the car up from the front engine mount, and the rear subframe for the rear.
Much easier and safer.
I'd leave the sills alone at all costs.

If it crumbled then it needs welding, don't leave it to long or it will massive as the front wheels flick all the sht up there.
A 2t jack can be had for £30 in a case.

This is what I did after spending ages fitting new sills a quick before and after for you

what did you do mate? how long and how much did it cost?
-
I cut out the old sills and welded in new ones then filled over the welds and the car had a full respray. Doing the sills didn't take that long, just took me so long as I was doing it after work and at weekends. Didn't cost much as I did all the work

That's about std for a Mk3 with crusty jacking points, always seem to need that extra bit in the floor up the front.
All caused by the wonderful jack vw provide.
-
My jacking points (all 4 to some extent - fronts worse) had been crushed and I had Advisories at MOT time for 2 years running. But had no rust and the sills were still solid.
I eventually had the sills done.

Thanks for advice guys it's appreciated, sorry not to reply sooner. Awesome job there murraymint!
I've put up a vid here how bad does that look ??
http://www.thequietplace.co.uk/emit/golfmk3.mov
Found a local guy who seems to be saying the right stuff, is a VW enthusiast, is talking £100 to patch both sides. He mentioned "sill covers" if the rot was bad, I'm not sure about this as I would have thought that's just hiding stuff, but he's coming over to have a look and talk properly I'm not sure I understood him correctly.

If I uploaded a picture of the underside could you show me where??
If I'd known how cheap trolley jacks are I would have bought one years ago!

That looks pretty crusty, going to need more than patching.
looks like the end of the sill by the front wheel is through as well, what's the other side like?
Both sides welded in will cost upwards of £350, then there is painting, probs another £250.
Lot of Mk3's go to the ocean in the sky for this
Good luck
-
My sills cost £150 to weld up, approx £35 for the sills themselves.
Painted them myself, admittedly with matt black for the cost of a big rattle tin from Halfords.
Oh I already had the primer.
But definitely under £200 all in.

Agree. A proper job should cost this, as if its done properly it will take a lot of time.
That's if you have to do inner sills and patched on the floor with the correct gauge metal. Which is likely to retain the correct strength.

I've tried looking for a decent underside picture of a mk3 but drawn a blank.

Here's a pic of the underside of mine where I had the floor plated

And the front of my new sill ( the bit behind the wing)

Try a Haynes manual.
