Firstly, I am not talking about my wife.
Secondly, if the mods think that this counts as a 'whats it worth' thread, then feel free to delete - but it's not really my intention.
Last year, my G Reg standard Mk2 Gti 8v had the headlight(dimmer?) wiring loom problem where the wires chaff under the airbox and for some reason it is a unfused circuit so it fried the wires.
She was recovered home and I disconnected the loom however I couldn't get her to start. I figured that something had blown - maybe immobiliser - and my thoughts were that I may have figured the problem in a few hours or it could have been days. So I bought another one.
I thought I would keep if so when the MOT ran out on my new 8V, I could nick bits off it but as it turned out that wasn't necessary. Now it needs to go.
Obviously I could break it for maximum profit or scrap it for metal for maximum ease. I am probably somewhere in the middle though and I would have thought the engine was too good to waste - especially if it can help out another forum member.
If this was yours, what would you do?

Condition of SHELL and RUST issues are the ONLY consideration here. if the shell is decent then its worth saving
otherwise break it yourself or others will profit from your misfortune.
-
If you break it im desperate for standard suspension.......

Buy another loom and fix it... 2 days work at most and then sell her as a good car... :)
Just like Chuff says :afro:
-
The car looks level enough, and there can't be that much wrong with it! just a guess, but possibly the engine lost its earth, and fed power back up the dimmer circuit, and possibly melted the fuse box, who knows... but it shouldn't be anymore than 3 or 4hrs work for a decent Sparky to sort, if you didn't fancy ago yourself that is...
Calypso is one of my favourite colours on a Mk2, reasonably rare too for a 3 door... I'd snap your hand off for that! And too good to break going from the pics

Thanks for your replies.
OK, I have decided not to sell it for scrap, so I will prob either break or fix it.
I do have the next week off so have some time to do either. It is indeed the best colour of the 4 that I have had. It probably had the best bodywork too, however it has been sitting there since last summer so has a few more rust spots now. Nothing serious though.
However, when I removed the headlight loom, I noticed that where the bundles of wire enter into the back of the fusebox some of the insulation of the other wires had been melted through where the fried loom had touched them. It was this that had put me off fixing it. I have also nicked a rain gutter from it which would need replacing.
So, are there any auto sparkys around West Sussex that would fancy having a look?

Dispirited.
Trying to trace what is wrong with the wiring. Starting to regret starting.
Seriously, any MK2 electrical gurus in W Sussex?
Bloody cold out today didn't help either.
-
Separate any melted wires. Check fuses and check for any burn areas on the fuse box. It has two clips each side and lifts up, out.
Does it crank over?
any dash lights?
fuel pump prime on ignition?
battery flat?

I am so sorry for not getting back to this thread.
Had fight to avoid resignation at work and now working ridiculous hours. Not much of an excuse, but everything else has been on the back burner recently.
Special thanks to Mr Blue and Thom for their advice.
I am really time-poor at the moment so rang up a couple of scrappers to ask how much they would give me for it - with and without a few bits taken off to be broken. They both told me to stick it on ebay as I would get more for it. Honest guys.
I am going to do that in the next couple of days so if anyone wants to have a look first, then let me know. Car is in West Sussex, just off A23. (I have this Tue and Wed off).
-
Oh, and if I wasn't clear, I am not breaking it. It is to go as one.

One scrappy reckoned it would go for £300 on ebay and the other £400.
Come and check it out and make me an offer. Would prefer someone from the forum to find some use for it.

Looks in good nick to me got potential

Sold on ebay to a guy in Gloucestershire. He is a mechanic and intends to get it back on the road.
Just glad it didn't end up getting scrapped.

How much did you get for it in the end?
