Title: Insurance want to write off my mk2 can anyone help
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 21 March 2013, 18:53
Some arsehole hit into the back off me waiting at a roundabout. I have a f**ked rear bumper and the rear panel under the boot is dented. Because of the age of the vechile an insurance recommended retail price is non existent. I need good estimates that favour the car, the damage is bumper and rear panel. Save my car please. Will get picks soon as

If the car is actually a minter then you can fight it to prove its worth but if its just an avg mk2 do as above!

It's a mint 8v gti. Near perfect body and paint. High mileage but runs like a dream

Why ever didn't you get an agreed value insurance policy?

what you need to do is then get an agreed cost of repair, dont take it to the insurance's recommended bodyshop. and also prove the worth of your car, start scanning, printing, copying adverts of similar cars to yours

so for example, you then go to insurance and say lets agree on £500 to repair the car, its worth £2000. they send you out a cheque you repair the car yourself, everyone is happy & your car aint wrote off!

An agreed value policy through a specialist broker for an 20 year old car, often is cheaper than regular Direct Line type companies.

Ah the benifit hindsight!
Not OPs problem at the moment, but I'm sure he'll look into it, in the future
Moving on...
OPs car could easily be worth 2 to 3k, possibly more, but who knows on the day!
I would go down the cash in lieu of repair route, where the insurance company would agree a price to contribute to repairs, without the car being written off... Which is something I'd push for all day long, getting your car back as a cat c/d is a costly ball ache!
Be very kind to the insurance engineer, and he may sympathise with you and work it in your favour, without it being written off

HIC offer it for about £30 on top of any policy you buy, £30 bought me £2k cover on my GTI a few years back.

Lots of body ship places today have been recommending a accident management company to keep it out of insurance. They do basically the same thing minus giving me a claim against my name.

Update people: his insurance got in contact and as he accepted liability they are willing to flip the bill. I should get whiplash compensation as well and a courtesy car in the mean time. GTI spring festival should still be on for me.
