Title: mk2 fuel guage inop

hi i own a 16v mk2 golf, since ive brought the car the fuel guage hasnt worked, ive checked fuses and put some volts to the back of the speedo meter terminals on the fuel guage, that works fine.
other things i should check for?

the fuel guage float sender unit in the tank? easy enough to remove via boot

yep, lift the carpet and you'll see a black plastic circular cover held on with screws. remove that then you've got access to fuel tank sender unit and intank lift pump. the plastic screw housing on the tank itself is usually pretty tight, use a wooden drift & hammer to release it
