Title: Fully Custom ChalkBoarded Bonnet
Post by: LittleReDuck on 20 March 2013, 13:32
As promised int he new members thread here is what started off as a little idea and rapidly became a full bonnet.  The existing bonnet was really suffering from lacquer peel and generally looked very poor on the front of the poor GTi.

The main issue with being a student is budget, for this a respray simply wasn't an option.  Being a design student as well I wanted to create something a little bit individual.

The process was simple, removed the bonnet and carried in into the conservatory (which was a damn site warmer than outside) and used a high grade sandpaper to rough and flatten the the surface.  Wash the bonnet to remove all the dust and rubbish then apply three layers of blackboard paint (I used a roller).  When dry go nuts with your creative side! (I pre-sketched the design in regular chalk before lining in with chalk makers)
When all this was finished four layers of clear coat was applied and the bonnet was re-hooked up! Happy Days!

Anyways I was super pleased the the end result and I think the 'Individual' look was well achieved!

I like the bonnet when it's in your conservatory, think it looks out of place on the car though. Personally I'd do the whole car

Would love to see the whole car like this. Bonnet is good and looks out of place. I wouldn't do it but I would stop and admire it.

I'm not really sure on the logistics of doing the roof...not something I can take off and pop in the conservatory!

I agree a white or black car would probably fit much better.  In fairness the on car photo, which was taken in the dark on my blackberry, doesn't really do it full justice.  I should really have taken and posted a day time picture.

I would love to attempt a a whole car but I don't see many people agreeing to let me have a crack at it.

The bonnet looks great . Would love this up against my white golf  also doing the whole car would look brilliant . Not something you see every day . If I had your skill I would Defo do the roof like that on mine.
