Title: some codes and smoke help fast pretty please!!!
Post by: novadragon007 on 19 March 2013, 19:20
May need to put my mods on hold just now as the car started being a fud again.

Recently installed my catch can and the car stopped doing its dodgy idle for about 2 days, started it up this morning and first thing i noticed was theres a hell of alot of smoke at startup, from first looks its grey so i dont think its anything too sinister just moisture built up in the exhaust but it takes a fair old tme to clear. second is the car is making a wooshing sound as i accelerate which i assume is the turbo but it sounds really loud. ive got a full stainless and a decat but it really does sound alot louder than im used to. All the boost hoses are on and secure and my turbo to pancake pipe is an agu done up with mikalors so its air tight that was the first place i checked. 3rd thing was when i put it back on vag com and block 32 is showing (-8.6%) Idle & (+6.8%) Partial which isnt good so did a quick fault scan and got the following:

            P0420 - 35-00 - Efficiency Below Threshold

can anyone help me with what i need to do to sort this?, like i said ive got a catch can in place and all the joins are air tight as is the capped off vaccumm port on the manifold. My next port of call was the sai delete and n249 bypass to eliminate them as the culprits but with the small piping for the n249 i dont see even a big split could cause that much fueling correction.

Any help appreciated

Was it like this before the catch can ?
Removing the SAI is a good place to start as it gets rid of more boost piping (possible leaks)
I know people rave about mikalor clamps but you can over do them and bend the piping, which again can cause leaks.
When you say it takes a long time for the grey smoke to clear, how long roughly 30 seconds or are we talking minutes?
Any loss of coolant or oil?

only did the catch can a couple of days ago and theres been no oil loss since i checked it a couple of days ago.

Yes it was like this before the catch can but it cleared after install and has only just come back.

The mikalors were just done up enough to keep an air tight seal the pipe hasnt warped i anyway.

The grey smoke takes upwards of 5 minutes to clear its once the engine starts to get heat in it that it stops

Ive now got massive amounts of blue smoke coming out my exhaust it started with it just under acceleration soon as i lifted off it would stop its now happening whilst parked and idle it started billowing out the exhaust so i quickly turned the car off and its now cooling down but its still the same codes as first post just very smokey. The catch can i installed is still all nice and tight so i dont think its oil from there unless said can is dowing absolutely nothing and just dumping it back into the intake or is my turbo seals now fooked? any help or ideas please

What guide for the catch can did you follow?

As long as you have a tube coming off the rocker cover, covering off the hockey puck and one of those 2 teed into the oil breather under inlet manifold and the other 2 into the catch can it should be fine.

May sound daft, but did you check the puck is still functional

gave the puck a good wipe down and i was able to blow through it from both sides which from what ive read means its functional correct me if im wrong. Another thing ive noticed is its only when im faced up a hill that this happens.
