Title: First time I have thought about an upgrade
Post by: ccaasjf on 18 March 2013, 21:24
Hiya,

Have a 2007 5dr GTI which has been superb, thank god can't say that about the dealers. She now has 41k on the clock and apart from kerbing one wheel 3 times the rest is almost perfect. Could not see the point of upgrading to a mark 6 as it was basically the same car but I am looking at a mark 7 in a years time.

What I don't like:
Quarter lights on the front doors, really hate them.
Head rests, mark 5 and 6 were special.
18" wheels, why did they change from the monzas?
Electronic Handbrake
Grill not special enough, this is an area that the mark 6 struggled with compared with the mark 5.

What I like:
19 wheels, wow love them.
Leather, alcantara and tartan seat combination
Interior in general
Perf pack and bigger brakes.

Looking forward to a test drive.

I absolutely agree with you about the seats, i think they've just used the ones from the A3 in another cost saving exercise? Having said that i don't think i've seen the headrests in the production car only the "concept" ;D

Edit: just had a closer look at the Geneva pics and you can see the headrests are the same. :'(

The quarter lights hark back to the Mk1, but in the Mk7's case, is because the windscreen is at a shallower angle and the doors would look odd if they followed the line of the A pillars. Having what is essentially an extra pillar can create a massive blind spot when looking right at roundabouts in other cars. My Dad (for his sins) has a Kia Venga, and that is downright dangerous. I can't comment about the Golf tho', as I haven't driven one.

The Monzas are a lovely wheel, but the design is something like 8 years old now. They need to be changed at some point, otherwise we would still have GTI's with BBS RA's or P Slots on them. You could always order a Mk7 with the cheapest wheels on it and fit a set of Monza Shadows if you really like them that much.

The electronic handbrake is very good in practice, especially with Auto-hold. My Passat has one, and after just 2 weeks of getting used to it, I'm finding the good old fashioned one in my Golf a bit of a faff to have to use. It's not as if I've every used it for a handbrake turn.

The MK6 is not "basically the same car"...it has a completely different engine for a start

Sat in a GT at lunch time, was a smart affair but not tempted to cross over with a 61 plate GTD.  Thought the seats  bolsters and the headrest were both better in mine.  Still they had to make weight and cost savings somewhere i guess.
