Hey all,
My cousin is looking to buy a mk4 Golf, either V5 or GTI. He was asking me if I knew how to tell the difference btween a 150 brake and a 180. I don't know much about mk4s and couldn't answer his question. He'd searched the web several times and came up with nothing. I mentioned I was a member of this forum and suggested to him that we might get some help here...

The 180 is quicker than the 150, LOL

engine code (not sure with out lookin but im bedridden and cant get up at mo!!) and the earlier 150's are drive by wire (throttle cable) and the later 180's are non drive by wire (so no throttle cable, you have a servo on throttle housing insted)
ill give you more info if i can get the mrs to get my folder from the other room!!

AUQ engine code is the 180bhp model, im pretty sure they're the only 6 speed 1.8T gti's available too.

Thanks all for the replies. I've been zonked out recovering from jet lag these past few days  It looks like the most obvious difference is gonna be the six-speed box...I wouldn't know where to start looking for the engine code. Are there any more diffs?

vicky verky........the cable is non-dbw, the potentiometer is the dbw.
The 6 speed is a lovely box  and IMO the 180 is a better drive than the 150, having owned both, and the lump is very responsive in standard form. Re-mapping the later engines can give you more than the earlier lumps, but the earlier engines can also take more because they had slightly stronger internals as they were very over-engineered.

Thanks folks. We've got another question now......V5 or GTI? And if V5, 155 or 170?

A gti turbo, far more tuneable

The v5 has some good std options, but the engine is a bit plop even in the 170bhp guise. Go for the GTI turbo, you won't be disapointed.
