Post by: jnufcuk on 16 March 2013, 12:43
Hi all,

Looking at getting an iMac and noticed the lack of cd drive.

the apple usb drive is £65 but heard some people complain about it breaking not being very good.

Anyone have one, or an alternative.

Im looking at imac not macbrook pro.

Ahhh, Apple. Charging you £1100 for a gorgeous looking underpowered and functionally restricted ornament. How kind of them to omit an optical drive and ask £65 to have one included.
Try ebuyer/scan/ocuk for USB external disc drives.

I bought a cheap eBay USB DVD drive and it works perfectly in my Mac.

I wouldn't say they're underpowered either.  Core i5 and i7 processors, 4GB RAM minimum.  That's pretty powerful in my book.

Who needs a disc drive these days?

I just bought a Mac Mini, going to use it as a Media Centre with my TV and have all my iOS devices have access to all my media.

Core i5 (Ivy Bridge I believe), 4GB RAM, that'll do for me on this occasion.

I have a NAS at home that does the same thing.

I used my Blueray drive on my PC to read a 14 year old music CD that you can't get for love nor money anymore, is scratched to hell and my DVD drive on the laptop couldn't read it without skipping every few seconds! So they do have their uses. Once a year or so.
