Has he got the disc loaded in the unit?

For bluetooth, turn the ignition on whilst stationary, set your phone to search for new devices and pair once found. Think the code is 1234 or 1111

If you press the "phone" button on the head unit and you get the screen for the phone then it's fitted, if all it does is mute the sound then it's not.

The bluetooth kits are available on ebay and it's pretty straight forward although a bit fidly to fit, the below link is for a mk6 but i imagine it's fairly similar in the 5, Darren fitted mine (mortygt140 on the mk5 forum)

Is the head unit definately an RNS and not an RCD? Has it got the button for Nav?

Ah, that'll be it then mate, if there is only 6 buttons (3 either side) then it'll be an RCD 510 so hasn't got nav, the unit looks very similar but has less features, i've got one in my mk6.

my son is gutted now looks like I am going to be on the look out for a new head unit for him preferably with sat nav any ideas off some half decent aftermarket ones

Tbh mate you'd be as well getting an RNS 510 off ebay for ~£500 cos you'll pay that for any decent aftermarket head unit, you could sell the RCD for £200+ so it doesn't cost as much.

If you want Bluetooth as well, you may be as well to get an RNS315 as fitted to the current Passat.

It has Bluetooth built in as well as DAB. It is also easier to navigate through your ipod/media folders as you scroll through using a knob as opposed to the hit and miss slider on the touch screen of the RCD/RNS510. It also has the option to "Mix All." Something that the 510 can't do either.
