Title: Have my inner CV joint gone?
Post by: Deefadog on 30 July 2005, 08:41
I had the car jack up yesterday  the fronts BTW, as i was taken the wheels off to get new rubber fitted.

Anyway, thought i would check for any ware on the front, when i rotate either of the wheels back and forth there was like a faint grinding noise with a very faint knocking noise, which was coming from the inner CV joints (these are the things the turn the wheels yes? and have like 15-20 screws in them)

But which ever wheel i rotated it was the same noise, and also say i rotate the wheel forward and the inner CV turns with it, when i rotated it the other way there was like a 10mm of movement of the wheel before the CV moved, like it there was a delay!

Now this could be how it is supposed to be, but can anyone tell me if anything is knackered or loose?

Cheers

Don't think so mate I did the exact same thing yesterday whilst doing my topmounts I figured it's just the gearbox shafts rotating (hope so anyway!)

Phew :)

I have still got a click noise when i turn left at sloww speeds, but i think it may be the exhaust! but i can't see where abouts on the exhaust!

Any points along the exhaust that i shouls check? i was think about finding where on the car the exhaust is close to something, like the rear axle and put some white paint on it or something, then it should show up any rubbing!

good idea?

Every little helps! get a friend to rev it whilst you look under it thats how I fixed mine! check the mounting rubbers get under and give it a woblle see what makes all the noise!

turning left at low speeds indicates a cv joint worn to me, you want both windows down (with a passenger and hang out whilst doing anti clockwise and clockwise turns (at full lock in a car park etc)

see when you can hear this and what side its coming from... it will be the out cv joint of what ever side you hear the noise loudest, i doubt very much its the exhaust as these tend to knock rather than click

if it is get it done sooner rather than later, i left one on my old blue 8v, then when the mrs was using it one night it popped the drive shaft out of the cv it was that worn!! (when she was doing a full lock tun) resulting in no drive and a driveshaft slappin about!!!

easy to change if it is i got on form stuart (europarts) complete kit with boot/grease joint etc all in for £25 i think, easy to fit as well.... well for me but then i do all my own stuff cause i can....

Cheers mate, i'll check again, get my mate to hang out :)

£25 - sounds cheap :) great!

I don't mind doing it myself, but it the bolts that don't budge are the main pain in the ass! and i don't have the big breaker bars to do the job!

tis only the hub/driveshaft bolt thats an @arse, 30mm impact socket and a decent driver then a piece of scaffolding bar thats what i use for the stubborn tw@ts!!
