Hi guys, ive got this knocking noise on my 96 gti 8v and it's starting to get on my nerves. The noise comes from under the car and from what i can hear is somewhere in the middle. It only knocks when i put my foot down..(now and then over rough roads).I thought it was the exhaust but this seems ok and not moving around.Has anyone had the same problem or know what this may be??

engine mounts probably....
-
It could be a loose heat shield.

Check all of the bushes

Is it a thumping sound? If so it's same as what my car is doing. Me rear trailing arm bushes have gone. Need to buy some and replace. Mine knocks when going over a speed bump quitt fast, other wise it doesen't.

could be when you accelerate the engine is moving back on the mounts. check for obvious marks around where the exhaust comes from the engine to the rear of vehicle.
failing this, anti roll bar bushes
hope this helps

It dont jump about at the rear and the noise is not a thumping sound...would worn engine mounts make the exhuast move more than usual when pulling away quick and making the exhuast knock.

Yes mate, when you put your foot down the engine rocks, and obviously the exhaust is fixed in one position with very little play.
Resulting in banging from exhaust or engine rock !
Had the same problem with a Beemer when a 5 series box was fitted instead of a 3 series, every time I booted it, the box mounts snapped, and the box would hammer against the turret !
If its a heat shield it will sound very tinny and extremely annoying !
