What is this and what does it do? It makes ticking noise is this normal?

Its the purge valve which recirculates fuel vapour build up from the fuel tank into the intake and breather system, the carbon canister that is connected to is more than likely well past it's serviceable lifespan anyway so can be removed to rid you of the irritating ticking noise and clean up the bay a touch.

Excellent guys cheers for the info it has really helped. I take it i block off the pipe to the inlet and leave the other pipe open?
