Title: how low on coils can you go with 16"
Post by: Sonic B0000M on 11 March 2013, 13:56
About to get some coilovers. And wondering how low I can go on 16" standard gti wheels without rubbing? 40 or 50 mm.

You need to worry about your front ARB more than the size of the wheels.

Completely depends on the rest of the car
the wheels arnt the factor of how low you go if you had a under driveshaft arb and a notch in the chassis you could put it on the floor

But without changing arb ect. How low can you go on coilovers?

Why not just get 18s and slam the thing?

Will get new wheels eventually.  Want it lowered first. Then the R32 body kit.

If you're getting coilovers then why ask? They're adjustable for a reason...

Because if you csn only go 40mm without changing things to the car then I might as well just get 40mm springs and save my self some money.

And get 18s later on and buy coil overs then? Waste of cash?

Buy coil overs and then you can go up and down as you wish. I would say for what your talking about.

maybe someone should put forward the ride clearances for 40mm drop and if they would fit 18"rims?

so for example im getting some Koni shocks and lowering springs but debating 35-40mm drop as i'm not looking for stupidly low. i also want to stick some 18s on and spacers> 15mm up front and 20mm around the back. what would be the best suggestions for this then? i've got the ARB's and struts sorted btw

any help on this then?

(sorry about the thread jack)

I think there was a ride height thread around at some point
But spacers totally depends on the offset and width of your wheels

i did this SONIC....... get the collies first, i sat on 15's for awhile, got a tax re-bate then got some 17" BBS lm reps then not long after got hold of some 18" rs4 reps, Im glad i did it that way as i could play with the height to suit the wheels and ride.

Where's the best place for spacers, im after some for my 18" Rs4 reps, plus longer wheel nuts?

If you think they are on a fit then go for it
Can get 15's from creation Motorsport but for 20mm I would recommend getting bolt on ones.
I got mine from a hop on the bay but can't remember where

I would definitely look at buyin bolt on spacers for the 20mm!
A few nasty stories out there of snapping bolts due o the extra leverage from the length of the bolts!

 why would you get is of the arb???
People uprate them for a reason!
Fair enough if it is a show only car but on the road it is a idiotic idea...

Ignore Danny, he likes to pretend he's in the fast & the furious so loves losing control of his car and making the tyres squeal...impresses the young girls apparently :lipsrsealed:

To be fair, his car is so low that the arb will be making little difference.

Back on topic, don't get lowering springs, you'll end up buying coilovers eventually anyway so it will be a false economy. You'll manage ~50mm drop before hitting arb issues, that can be resolved easily enough with an arb that goes under the driveshaft instead.

As for spacers I'm running 15mm front and 20mm, neither bolt on, but both hubcentric. I'd look at getting them from JJC:

I know what your saying but have tried riding as low as you are with a uprated arb??
For all you know it could make a nice impovent that you didn't even know was there.

Not being b!tchy but in my mind anything that stiffens the chassis is nothing but good if equally balanced and getting rid is a rubbish idea

as stated lowering springs are the thinking mans choise

im not against coilies at all infact im still debating the two but as the car is a daily i want some comfort,  have to take my missus mum places sometimes as i'm the favourite  and i personaly THOUGHT that lowering springs and shocks were more stable than coilies, thats what i thought anyway, at the end of the day its personal preference, around here we have sh!t roads with the A12 so im more inclined for the lowering springs but if you have black top as smooth as a babies bum then by all means get them colies

Yeah. I don't want it massively low just 40mm. So I think springs is the way forward for me.

This is mine on Pro Sport coilovers. Rears and as low as they will go without taking the adjusters out and the front is low with possibility of going a lot lower. Just to give you an idea mate?

Just got my coilovers. What spacers do I need for the standard 16 wheels?
