Finally got my chip from eBay soldered in today. Pound for pound an absolute bargain, pulls miles harder now  Definitely worth a buy for cheap power.

Who soldered it in for you
Cost and location ?
Been needing mine doing for ages
-
It was a local guy, here his website www.itrustrepair.co.uk (or something like that, if its not right just google "itrustrepair Chorley Tim" tim's his name) he specializes in laptop and PC repair. He is based in Chorley in Lancashire. You might be able to post it to him and he'll send it back for a cost. As for price he only charged me £20 for unsoldering the old chip and fitting the new one. Hope this helps.

Thanks ! I never thought about asking a pc geek !
-
is it the power-chip one?
i had mine fitted a while back and im getting an extra 50kms out of a tank! :)
plus the added fasts of course
-
I've also been thinking about getting one, thanks for the recommendations.

What Mk3 has the chip been installed into and are there any other modifications to complement the chip?
-
Yeah it was one of the power chip ones, im well impressed with it. As for car and mods, its a 8v GTI and all iv done so far is a K&N in a mod'd air box (see my other posts for that). Next on my list is a decat and adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
-
Why the need for a fpr? You'll loose power with anything higher than standard, with least on a 200hp abf.. Don't bother.
-
I had a adjustable fuel reg on a 1.8 Mazda I used to have and it worked a treat. I have noticed the setup on the golf is quite different, is it because of the way its setup its not worth doing?
-
Yeah they are good for a cheap mod. Only adds about 3bhp with slightly better torque

come on get that chip in! :)
-
Perfect time to considering the car is off the road until I put the inlet manifold back on so will go see the pc geeks next door to work tomorro and report back !
-
Hopefully will be doing this soon too :).
Took my ECU apart the other day and found a metal cover so thought my ECU just couldn't be chipped. Just as i was about to post on this topic asking about it i read that you can pop the metal covers off (DOH!) so gonna take it back out later and have a look to see if its socketed or soldered, then i will go from there :)
-
Only the back cover popped off my ECU the front was soldered on. the guy who fitted mine removed it altogether when fitting the chip, but prior to that I very and I mean very carefully removed the top off chrome box with a angle grinder to see if mine was a push fit or a solder-in.

this one? (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-GTI-2-0-16V-ABF-PERFORMANCE-CHIP-Chiptuning-SEAT-IBIZA-/271163559346?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+III&hash=item3f229b8db2)

that's what i've got.. he's a push fit
-
sweet, less bother to fit
any demonstrable gain?

any demonstrable gain?
yep! it's good
-
thanks, so buy chip, remove ECU, push fit chip, refit ECU and happy days?
Simple as that?
-
Let's get this straight guys and gals. There seems to be lots and lots of confusion.
16v ABF ECU's all push fit. Easy to fit, 10 minute job.
2E 8v I'm 90% sure it's Push fit.
ADY and AGG (1994-1998) 8v is soldered in, this is not easy to do and will need someone who knows what they're doing.
VR6 I'm pretty sure they're all soldered in.
-
yep as khare says.. easy with a 16v

thanks for the clarification, are you saying they are all a waste of time or that all except the abf are a waste of time?

Not pointless at all. If its a push fit, for around £40 you get more torque that doing decat, exhaust and K&N. Even if it needs soldering its still good value.
-
NOT pointless. I dont think people are lying on here (me included) when they say they have noticed a
difference upon fitting one. It might not be a huge difference, but a gain is a gain as proved by some of the
tests carried out on here with fitted and without
-
I underlined the 8v's.
-
My bad
-
thanks for confirming that Gav
-
I own an 8v and will champion them to anyone who will listen but they are what they are.
-
There will be a gain on the 8v that I'm sure of, just not as much gain as on a 16v or VR6. The only thing that would put me off chipping my 8v is the fact I'd have to buy the chip then pay someone to solder it on, which is added cost.
On my 16v it's given me 9hp, dyno proven.
-
Agreed, i just don't think its cost effective on an 8v.. better just to give it a damn good service.

8v's are awesome for cruising
-
Khare, was yours the same chip that I linked to?
-
Yes. Joe has changed his ebay username for some reason.
If you contact him before buying it you can ask him for specific maps like a higher rev limit or more fuel at X RPM, etc. The standard map he writes is very similar to the OEM map, he plays around mainly with ignition timing.
Fainter line is original chip, darker line is his performance chip.

-
Like my first posts says, my 8v definitely has improved torque now and I wouldnt have a clue about BHP gains but if you can find a pc tecy to do if a similar price to mine, its the best £60 iv spent on the car and it puts a little smile on my face when I put my foot down. :-)
-
Can he map the 16v ABF chip so it gives more grunt at lower revs? i don't feel the benefit of the 16v unless i'm giving it some which is practically never?
-
Why not send the guy a message and ask him
-
I think i shall!!!
-
Joe is really helpful, answers all your questions

Nice gain, I assume that the 155 is the original reading and that Joe's chip is hiking it to about 165 or so?
Can you confirm what requests you made of Joe as I'd be delighted to make the mid range gains you have, did you raise the rev limit at all?
My only experience of mapping is bespoke live stuff on my scoob so this pre packaged mapping is a new concept to me so forgive my questions.
-
I didn't ask for anything different so that's his standard chip. Limiter was not raised, although I do wish it was raised a few hundred RPM more.
-
getting my chip fitted today at the local pc repair place in west drayton hes charging me £30 I hope my car starts after

Thought you were up to 165bhp Andres?
My limiter is at 7000 and I wouldnt like it to go more than than in current state.

It is, the 155hp reading is from the standard run.
-
I asked that question earlier, the overlay seems to be the chipped run onto the plot for the std. run.
Well I decided to buy in, ordered last week, went for a 7200 limit as it's a track car and the FD is being swapped out and the flywheel skimmed lighter.
I'll let you know how I get on.

I've jusy had a chip fitted to my vr6 and now the car starts then dies straight away as if the immobiliser is cutting in any ideas people what could be wrong? Can't refit the original chip as the guy who fitted doesn't know where he put it.
Please help

I think hes killed your ecu
-
Really, wouldn't be the chip is faulty? Found the original chip now so will fit and see what happens. It was desoldered by an electronic engineere so cant have done any damage, I hope.
-
Ha ha sorry I just wanted you to panic for a second.
The chip could be blank etc.
-
Refitted the original chip and the car starts fine, must be a dodgy chip
-
refund?
-
refund?
+ Negative feedback?
-
Sounds like a waste of time, refund + negative feedback and then find a new chip elsewhere?
