Title: Diagnostic on mk4 GTi
Post by: hardmonkeys on 10 March 2013, 16:14
Hi all, I'm pretty much stuck on this little issue I have...I went to a non-dealer garage...in fact it was a tyre and exhaust place, and they plugged me in to their computer, it came up with 9 fault codes that he cleared, but no airbag fault...now..what does this mean??

1. There is a fault, but their crap system didn't pick it up?
2. There ISN'T a fault, and I need to take to VW or hire a man with VAGCOM to clear? Is there anyone in the south west?? I'm in Weymouth, but im prepared to travel.

I have tried the under seat wires, all seem ok to me, not been under the carpet or 'owt surely if the seat wires were problematic it'd be on the connector under the seats...wouldn't not?

Not attempted the passenger airbag, although the cover was loose when I bought the car...the drivers airbag looks to be free of damage..and what not...

Has anyone had this problem...and what did you do to rectify..

Thanks :-)

Would help if you said what the issue was! I'm assuming airbag light permanently on?

Ahh, sorry lol..yeh, when the ignition is turned on, it flashes, 4 or 5 times, then stays on permanently..I was expecting their computer to pick it up..which has baffled me even more lol

Thanks

I had an issue with a mk5 were the airbag light was in but vag com couldn't communicate with the airbag ecu, so it wasn't throwing any codes up. Had the replace tha air bag control unit in the end.

When they plugged in their computer did they look in the right place?
For example on vagcom you have the engine section which shows you the engine faults but you also have I terroir electrics and airbag and and etc etc

i doubt a tyre place will have anything more than a generic obd reader that will only give you engine fault codes. i can't remember if a static fault will make the airbag warning light flash before it goes solid, i have a feeling that's what happens when you disable one of the airbags in the control module (e.g passenger bag disabled so you can put a kid in the front). Either way even if you find a broken wire and fix it the airbag light won't go out until the fault has been cleared.. get yourself to a proper vw specialist, there are far too many clueless garages out there offering "diagnostics".

Yep as topher said get a proper reader for your mk4 eBay job works fine for the mk4 . Check all wiring / connectors clear fault and go from there . If light comes back on its obviously something else

Advisory only until 20 March 2013
The legal process for changing regulations has taken longer than expected and the bedding in period for the new items has been extended several times.

The latest news from VOSA is that:

The legislation to enable the changes required under Directive 2010/48/EU to the MOT test for Classes 4, 5 & 7, will come into force on 20 March 2013. Plans are now underway to enable the items (added to the inspection manuals in January 2012), which are currently being advised, to become fail items from 20 March 2013 where defects are found.

The latest version of the MOT inspection manual shows the new reasons for failure highlighted

Hi all,

Ordered a golf handbook off ebay, having a quick look through it and it says if the airbag light flashes, like mine, it could of been deactivated by vw...any ideas?? It flashes for around 10secs then stays on..

tyre place sure used an obd2 scanner, which can only scan emissions relevant controllers (typically that the ecu).

all other comms do not need to be standardised i.e. manufacturers keep their own protocol...

could check you fault codes but am about 150 miles one way :(

there is a vcds user list with lots of people on them (vwaudiforum.co.uk):

also used this it does do alot of vw stuff. the cable you referred to on ebay id personally avoid, you still have to get the software for it which is ross tech you would download from and chances are the cable wont work properly. I thought i got a hell of a deal for my genuine ross tech cable and software off ebay for 65 quid

thats what i said on page 1. just wait for wazzer he'll be able to sort it :afro: the hand held scanners are good for some things but you need vagcom for a task like changing adaptation values to disable airbags
