Title: Mk3 ABF starter replacement
Post by: MereKat on 09 March 2013, 17:09
Got the old one off ok, but the top and bottom bolts now won't line up...

Well, the bottom one doesn't anyway, top goes in fine...

How the hell does it go back!?

I know on other vw's you need to jack the box or engine to align the bolts holes up.. I've never done a 16v but I'm sure it will be similar

Iirc the bolts for the starter motor are also the same bolts that hold the front engine mounting frame to the block , and as you take them out the engine drops and the holes don't line up !

I had mine on a ramp with a pole jack wiggling the engine whilst someone had a bolt in the hole waiting for it to go in , very time consuming and stressful !

Got it supported ok, the front mount popped up when the top bolt came out. Looks like the front mount will need slackening/taking off the bolting the starter on, and replacing the front mount...

Blood VW's! :D
