My mk2 golf 1990 8v digi was running fine, then suddenly started hunting ie its reving on its own from 900 -1500 rpm. It then started to cut out at junctions but restart immediately, now it sounds like it's misfiring,
I've done the timing as per RJs guide, changed the blue temp for a genuine vw one, new ht leads, getting fuel and good spark.
I'm thinking it's electrical I've cleaned all the earth's, and double checked the vac lines, all the wiring seems fine I've disconnected all wiring and cleaned the connecting terminals
Really stressed and frustrated with it now
Any help would be ideal
Thank you

Have you checked the seal on the oil breather? That can cause rough running
-
Did you reset the ECU after fitting the blue temp sender??
Have you tried new plugs as well as the HT's?
-
Dizzy is the next thing if the fuel pump is not the problem.
Wiggle the plug on the dizzy and see if that helps. The contacts can break around that area.

Had the same problem recently and this is what it turned out to be, cheap fix at least

Fixed thanks guys, it was the cam breather lol, just need to adjust the idle now as it's not idling, but it's much smoother and sounds healthy :) does anybody know if there is a default amount of turns? As I removed the screw and cleaned it.
Thanks again

wow didn't know the breather can make this happen to your car! mines snapped oil everywhere so iv ordered a replacement part but it came like that with the car and iv been trying to find out why my car been acting up i'v replaced loads serviced it just waiting on this part.... fingers cross it cures it.

Mine wasn't snapped just perished not visible until I pulled it around....running like a dream now just gotta sort through idle out, but it's raining today :(
-
check the throttle butterfly and its housing are clean. this can cause hunting and idle issues... and its a quick check!
-
Thanks, I cleaned them with a bit of carb cleaner, but it's free I will clean them again lol, I'm sure it's just an adjust issue. I'll report back ;)

idle screw just needs turning any way to make idle where you want it. mixing screw tighten it all the way (slowly so you don't over tighten it) then back out 1 and a half times. but i wouldn't mess with the mixing screw to much.

a 1.3 carb will not be the same a 1.8 gti digi :lipsrsealed:
please be careful when giving advice that might be mis-leading.

woah sorry I misread it as an injection model.
If its a carb model check all jets for contaminates and check float height also check needle valve for correct seating.
don't touch the mixture screw without a gas analyser. its not worth the hassle.
Adjust idle to achieve 800 +/- 50
(I think that's the right idle but I stand to be corrected. either way its not a bad base level to start from.

The advice comment wasn't meant for you
