Title: Oh No...... RUST!!! (UPDATED)
Post by: popey on 08 March 2013, 18:20
Just noticed rust (bubbles under the paint work, not broken through) on both my front wheel arches, so annoyed I didn't spot it when I looked round the car and god knows how I missed it :(.

However after having a google it seems to be a common problem and can be done under the anti corrosion warranty.

Does anyone have any experience or advice they can offer me??

Spoke to my local VW dealer today (over the phone) and they have informed me I need to take it down to be assessed at there body shop (30 min drive).

If its not covered is it going to be an expensive job? 2 new wings I would imagine??

I feel so stupid for not spotting it :(

Mine is going in the same place, i had my mate look at it who's a panel beater and its had a ''smart repair'' by a pikey in a van at a car park so VW wont cover it. :( Mine has gone beyond the point of saving (im not bodging it up) so ill be buying a pair of wings and having him fit them :)

Mine is also going on the sill top just below the wing, this has never been touched so VW will be getting a call!

I will be doing the same if VW don't come through, but from the looks of it my wings are original. My worry is that VW said they have no knowledge of the problem :(.

I have found cheap 3rd party wing from here http://www.crashrepairparts.com/parts/markid/875/volkswagen_golf_hatchback_2004_2008_mk5/body-repair-parts-and-panels?_ts=1253, I dare say the fit wont be 100% but a decent body shop should get them to fit spot on.

I can easy see it been a £400-£500 job using 3rd party parts.

(Found this if it helps any http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/rust_wing/2009Nov9CorrosionToGolkMk5FrontWing.pdf)

Dealers are trying to fob you off it is a known problem with the mk5,it's the screws that hold the arch liner on. Phone VW head office & explain to them & give them the details of the dealer.

Good news!!

The guy at vw Blackburn was very helpful and knew thr cause of the rust. He was very helpful and open warning that I may only get a contribution but in most cases all costs are coverd. He said he would do the best for me and he seemed genuine.

For the record he took lots of pictures including one of the mileage, vin and the readings on the paint depth meter.

I should hear back in the next few weeks, fingers crossed.

My 07 ed 30 has just had a new bonnet fitted due to rust. VW paid 75%. I asked to look at the old bonnet and next to it was a pile of wings from mk5's that they had replaced. Very common problem and VW know all about it. I was unlucky with my bonnet, the guy said its the first one they have replaced due to rust. But there should be no problem VW paying for your wings !

I had the same problem...

The guy sold me the car said I could go to dealer and ask for warranty...

I went there, they told me it was not covered since the both front wings had been repainted...

What is the best thing I can do now...?!

How much do u guys think it would cost in total?

Cheers

Come to the conclusion that all Mk5s get this, mine has bubbling all along both front arches. Spotted two other 2005 Gtis in the last few days and both of those had it too, clearly visible.
Printed off the PDF and visiting VW on Monday. Fingers crossed and ready for a battle !
