Title: engine fires then dies
Post by: gary_e on 08 March 2013, 00:39
I have a 97 Mk3 Golf
Due to my daughter having her handbag stolen  along my only key I needed to remove the ignition barrel to take to the locksmiths. This included disconnecting the battery.
Job done I turned the engine over and it started over first time but died immediately. I tried a few more times but no matter how much I pumped the gas pedal the engine always dies as quick as it fired up.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Sounds like an immobilser problem.

Your missing the chip thats inside your key. You could get one programed but they will need to see the old chip or read it before hand
Doh

Oh - I did not think it had a key based immobiliser. It does have a separate immobiliser where I have to touch a button with a special fob.

An immobiliser stops the engine from stating at all doesn't it?

any help appreciated

thanks

Not much help to you but there's a shop near me (Sheffield) that can cut and programme keys from the ecu works out at a out £50 a key.

I know this had to have 2 done when the dog completely chewed mine up.
