So the story starts.......

I had been regretting getting rid of the mkiv for a little while and about three weeks ago i had a job to carry out on a none vag car which i did and i actually enjoyed working back with cars again,i had said that i wasn't going to be bothering with all of that again but....had a change of mind so a plan started in my mind  i would love a mk6 gti but thats out of the question financially  so i decided to look at older mkiv's again then getting shafted on a winning bid on a mkiv changed my mind so the plan was to look at mk2 and 3's on e-bay and if anything caught my eye well stick a bid in.I looked and had the odd bid on a few mk2 and 3's but a couple of weeks ago a mk3 caught my eye,so before work on the sunday night i put a bid in an hour or two before the auction end and to my suprise i eventually had the winning bid so i had my mk3 2.0 8v for the sum of £455  mot'd until july but tax ran out at the end of february tho,so after getting in touch with the seller i asked him to tax it for 6 months for me so total cost at £576 which i was happy with as from the photo's it looked tidy enough and i was prepared to travel from up north to down london to get it i was also aware that it needed a couple of jobs doing but i didn't mind that however.Well it had been a long couple of weeks but allowed me time to sort insurance out etc and yesterday at an unearthly hour began the train trip down to london the seller picked me up and off to have a look at the mk3 in question well after seeing it come out of the garage i was pleased yes it has the odd scratch a tiny dent and small rust patch but well it is almost a 16 year old car but still tidy for its age and the owner had looked after it during his ownership so after parting with my cash i had my golf again,a tankful of fuel and i set off on the 269 mile trip back up north, well at least it gave me a chance to get the feel of it etc i guess  and believe it or not i'm actually liking it alot after spending a few hours driving it  so at last i'm back in a 'GTi'  albeit the mk3 but hey should and will be a challenge.

So here's some information on the golf....

It's Dragon Green,a 1997 p plate (which i'm deciding on transfering my personal plate to),3 door model done 159,000 miles and also pleasantly suprised at the pile of old reciepts, mot's etc it came with and even a spotless wallet and handbook  was missing the 'Gti' front and rear badges and the rear 'Vw' one (but being me i had already sourced the 3 in question )
Well the car has already had some coilovers fitted (make unsure) and i'm guessing is dropped at 50-60mm has been fitted with front and rear VR6 highline leather seats (also been given the front & rear doorcards),has air-con fitted along with a powerflow rear twin pipe backbox (noisy but not ott but might swap that at some point?) missing a cd player and has 4 newish tyres with good tread and all four the same and according to the reciepts has had a cambelt done about 10k ago also in 2010 it has had the clutch assembly replaced and a gearbox re-build and bodywise its not to bad at all really nothing horrific and stuff that can be sorted myself as i intend to stick to budgets this time around  :lipsrsealed:

So onto the items that need sorted and it requires both rear wheel bearings replacing and rear brake pads replaced (seller included the parts with the car so money saved there ) also when i had a quick look yesterday i will have to add rear brake discs to (ones on are quite badly scored due to the small amount of brake material left)

Also getting to know the car from my drive home i have some other faults that need addressing  :lipsrsealed:

The hand brake warning light is illuminated all the time and the abs warning light doesn't illuminate with ignition on (noticed today the brake fluid level is at minimum).
Gearstick very loose/sloppy in neutral and when in gear.
The temp gauge sits at 70 when driving but at idle or in traffic moves up to 90.

So i have drawn up a list of work and parts i require to carry out :-
(In no particular order of being done).

1.Full wash, exterior clean, clay? and detail at some point.
2.Strip interior and clean headlining, carpets interior trim, glass and give the leather a good clean.
3.Fit the leather doorcards (fronts probable, rears alittle tatty so may keep the original rear cards?).
4.Golfgti forum stickers.
5.Possible a red pin-stripe adding to the front & rear bumpers and side trims. (ordered for tommorrow)
6.Get some 'Black Wow' for front/rear grey bumper trim, also side trims and roof spoiler.
7.Full service.
8.Paint wiper arms.
9.General body paint & tidy.
10.Genuine vw floor mats (found some and ordered tonight).
11.Smaller roof aerial (sourced from the note as it fits perfectly and free too!)
12.Front GTi badge.
13.Rear GTi badge.
14.Black rear vw badge.
15.Re-paint front black vw badge.
16.Re-furb and paint alloys.
17.Re-paint all brake calipers.
18.Instrument cluster & heater ventilation (Out of car and in processs of being worked on).
19.Set of new vw centre caps. (ordered)
20.New gearstick gaitor.
21.Drivers seat latch mechanism in-operative.
22.Cd player and fit & wire in front door speakers (some upgraded ones already placed in front doors).
23.Polish inlet manifold.
24.Tidy & clean engine bay.
25.Remove crappy sparco aluminium pedals.
26.Sort out all speakers & wire up properly.
27.Gti or Vr6 front splitter.(ordered)
28.Replace clutch & brake pedal rubbers.(ordered)
29.Try and adjust gearshift linkage at gearbox end if that don't solve the freeplay i have ordered a gearshift repair kit. (Repair kit delivered today)
30.Fit new rear brake discs & pads (t.p.s next week).
31.Replace rear wheel bearings.
32.Replace thermostat & coolant.
33.Fit new aerial gasket seal.
34.Fit new left & right hand foglight and blank lenses. (ordered).

Abit of a list there but most if not all of the work will be carried out by myself so should keep me busy  got a week off soon so will make a start on some of the jobs to be done

Well having got this far i have yet to add some pics of the golf

So here's some taken today (not clean due to all the motorway driving yesterday ) :

Will be looking to get one or two jobs done this week and can't wait to get it all cleaned out.
Title: Re: northeast_gti-t - mk3
Post by: northeast_gti-t on 12 March 2013, 23:25
Booked a night off work tonight so i could do one or two jobs

So trip over to the dealers to pick up a new thermostat cover and 'o' ring then made a start on getting the thermostat replaced (wanted to get the job done before i start using the mk3 for work and with the weather being cold at minute),gave me a chance to check over a few things too gave the header tank a clean out and dumped the old coolant to be replaced with some G13,got the job done wasn't to bad really but worthwhile as i tested the old thermostat and it was opening way past 87 degrees and not fully closing  so now i have a temperature gauge that sits at 70 degrees ,warms up quicker and blows out nice hot air  result!

Also from pictures of other mk3 engine bays i noticed a sensor in the base of the airbox and found mine taped and sealed up  i assume this to be the air inlet temperature sensor,so had a look around to find the sensor and wire wrapped around the maf sensor and hidden away, well needless to say its now back in its correct location but needs the metal clip fitted at some point as thats missing, checked all the lights and tyre pressures (which were way out) that sorted i found that the drivers side sidelight has blown    so will have to fit a new bulb this week at some point other than that been a productive day and getting some more done fair way to go yet.

Done abit more work on the mk3 yesterday decided to remove most of the dash to give it all a real good clean  also needed the cluster out as i had noticed the lack of illumination on the mileage/mfa screens  got myself two new bulbs and holders for the cluster and set to pulling all the dash apart, found plenty of dirt etc from all the years of other owners  and decided to see if i could fit a different wattage  bulb for the heater illumination only to break it  so got to order a new holder from vw this week i guess, well a result with the bulb replacement in the cluster as the two screens are now lit up and readable and the old bulbs were blown  also found a bodged speaker wiring set-up for the cd player  so have chosen to carry out a re-wire of the speakers and head unit, got a load of connectors earlier and set to and have converted the supplied iso lead and removed the oem wiring plug on the cars wiring loom so i can fit some proper connectors to them and then wire in the speakers into my converted connector hopefully job done.Centre console has been removed and cleaned up and fitted my new leather gearstick gaitor and also decided to remove the handbrake assembly and give it a clean up,need to start and remove the rear seat assembly and the door cards to start wiring up the speakers also plus with all the console removed once i get the front seats out i can remove all the carpets for a good valet and clean and then get the boot stripped out too and all the piller trim and headlining cleaned up most of the dash has been cleaned and will get put back together most of it done and its starting to look really cleaner now already looking forward to a week off then i can crack on with a few more jobs

Pretty much work in progress at the moment so taken a few pics of the work :
Some of the cleaned up trim

Converted iso lead done earlier.

Well thats all for now further updates to come.

Clutch & brake pedal rubbers arrived earlier today along with my splitter  so got up earlier this afternoon and went to get them fitted, also sorted my wiring for the headunit and half fitted it in all working apart from requiring the speakers all wired up now most of the dashboard trim etc is re-fitted so looking better already hoping to get the rest done once my bulb holder for the heater panel arrives at the dealers, had to pull out the remains of the old splitter from the bumper before i could fit the new one so looks like it was probably ripped off previously so despite it getting dark and snowy  i managed to get it all fitted will take some pics at some point and add them.

That's all for now....

Well decided i ought to update really  my weeks holiday has began and so has the jobs to do on the golf well over the weekend its been virtually stripped out,new aerial sel fitted (noticed a water leak in this area,so hoping this cures it as the old seal was fcukd completely) plastic trims seats carpet and underfloor foam etc, both front vr6 doorcards are fitted along with the speaker wiring all sorted and two new door speakers it was only when i set about the full interior clean up did i realise how filthy it was  never had to strip a car out for years but i guess previous owners aren't or weren't as ocd as me  :lipsrsealed:  but i have enjoyed doing it all and put a fair few hours in now but tbh its been worth it with how its all looking now and it will be staying mint inside too  few jobs to do but mechanical this week as i shall be fitting some new rear wheel bearings and disc pads as well as new discs which i'll pick up from newcastle t.p.s during the week £34.90 for those so happy at that, both front seats need a good clean and i have sorted the sticking tilt mechanism on the drivers side  :smug: all coming together now needs the bumper and trims all cleaned with the 'Black Wow' then the red pin stripe applying so i'm hoping that will be done this week also.Busy week ahead but at least i can get alot of jobs done and get it washed too hopefully  well being me i have taken a fair few pics of the progress so better get them added i guess.

The Progress (To-Date).
(not in any sort of order as i can't be fussed sorting them on photo bucket )

Well today's work had me getting the two front seats all cleaned up spent a good while cleaning the leather and took off all the plastic trim then found out i have the connectors and relay under the seats  so might have to think about sourcing a heated seats wiring loom etc  seats cleaned and re-fitted back in and tbh really pleased how much cleaner they are looking and the whole interior at last, just got to sort the gear linkage and gearshift bushes etc then i can at last re-fit the cleaned up centre console and my new leather gaitor then the interior is done!decided i would fit the red pin stripe tape onto the exterior trim to today then called it a day  will probably start and finish the 'black wow' treatment, looking forward to seeing nice black trim,so i will get some pics of the trim etc when done also had to order both left & right hand fog light lenses and covers as my passenger side lense fell off  and wont stick so they should be here this week hopefully and the centre caps  trip to tadepartsspecialists tommorrow morning to pick up the rear discs ready for later in the week, here's some pics of the newly cleaned front leathers  :

Been busy on the golf again  centre caps arrived this morning and called in my local t.p.s and picked up my rear discs a set of pads and spark plugs, then earlier before starting the gear linkage realised i would need an extra bush repair kit so hasty call to gsf and one in stock so over and collected that, then over to the dealer and picked up a new rear wiper and a set of aero's for the front and ordered up a new brake master cylinder cap (another trip over tommorrow to collect ) So began the task of sorting out the sloppy gear linkage and after stripping the various parts off it wasn't hard to see why it was so poor!! So fitted new linkage parts as well as new bushes etc then finally managed to adjust the linkage up after abit of trial and error  all good and best bit is the linkage is no longer like a rowing boat so decided not to fit the bottom gearstick ball and housing and bushes as it would just make another job fiddlely job but the end result has been worthwhile, and i finally got the centre console and new gearshift gaitor and the handbrake adjusted up,just the brakes and plugs for this week then done apart from a good wash and 'black wow' treatment.

Well started off okay this morning, got the rear pads out and calipers removed and discs off only to find no abs reluctor rings on the rear of the new discs  so rang the dealer to order a pair for the morning another £40  so had to be content with cleaning up the calipers and brackets ready to fit everything tommorrow now!! and left the golf on axle stands in the garage  i did fit the new spark plugs and clean all the leads, also the blanks and lenses from volksbits arrived only to find i recieved the wrong ones  so rang the dealer and ordered the one for the passenger side as well as a new rotor arm and distributor cap so hoping to pick all the bits up tommorrow along with the new brake master cylinder cap,on a good note i decided i may aswell give the trim and bumpers some 'black wow' treatment and wow!! do they look so much better than the faded grey colour  worth doing so left for me to do is finish off wheel bearings discs and pads and give it a wash.

So today i was hoping to get my list of jobs finished for this week so called at the dealers to pick up the parts i had ordered only to find the distributor cap & rotor arm hadn't been delivered so another trip over in the morning required  got the new master cylinder cap and tow eye blank fitted and then got on with fitting the abs rings and bearing kits to the rear discs new pads fitted and all sorted i also found the nearside rear lower shock bolt was a touch loose  and was knocking when moved so duly tightened that up and all good now, handbrake adjusted up all feels much better now! just need the cap and rotor arm and thats most of the mechanical stuff done (for now) then i will focus on the bodywork although i'm in no big rush to tidy it in a hurry been a successful week and i managed to give it a wash too  got some pics from todays work along with some general shots before and after wash and showing how much better the trim and bumpers look after being treated  car feels more like mine now looking forward to driving it some now.

Decided this week to transfer my personal plate from the (cough) note  to the golf so had a trip over the local dvla office to sort the paperwork so hopefully 4 weeks or so i can get it on,so last night i thought might as well order some 'wolfsburg' plate surrounds so they are on order  will fit them once i can fit the plates.ordered a cheap vag-com lead and a new tax disc holder they turned up today so the tax disc holders fitted  vag-com stuff will sort soon so at least i can check for any fault codes etc  :lipsrsealed: i decided today that i would finish off giving it a full service so trip over the dealers and collected the oil and filter and popped into a local motor factors for the air and pollen filters (vw had neither in stock).oil and filter sorted and had a good look around underneath all seems good so greased up door hinges etc seeings as i had some  decided that whilst sorting the pollen filter i would give the two panels and rubber some of the 'black wow' treatment that then led to the wiper arms getting some (no need to get them painted now) and on the whole it look loads better already  also re-fitted both clutch bulk head grommets PROPERLY! as these were well not fitted right at all
and also noticed that the brake servo hose one way valve nipple had a plug covering it  i then found a rubber vac pipe left loose and traced it back to a valve (electrical/vac?) above the abs unit so pulled the cover off and re-fitted the hose back onto the one way valve shall look into what that all is  so making progress with it mechanical more or less sorted just body and paint stuff and alloys to sort out really now using it more as my daily drive and liking it

Small update Well after some helpful advise here i swapped over the rear abs sensors and looks like its not the rear left sensor  so found myself a replacement abs pump/ecu with the exact part numbers required so ordered in readiness i was hoping it would be delivered by the end of the week so i could get it fitted this weekend but its not turned up!  so it will have to wait until i get it now, noticed the other day that my fuel gauge acts up i.e. full tank does not read full via the gauge  so with the help of the 'how to guide' on here i got myself a new pump & sender unit yesterday and got that fitted :afro:

(http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr22/mjwvag20vt/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/2013-04-26145616.jpg) (http://s466.photobucket.com/user/mjwvag20vt/media/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/2013-04-26145616.jpg.html)

original oem unit was worn so was worth changing really, mine came out alright considering some dont, filled the tank up earlier and result! brimmed the tank and the gauge is now reading full  also sorted another little job that was annoying me in that i have removed and re-centred the steering wheel so its level when in a straight line and not the 45 degree's it was also cleaned up the battery and tidied and removed some old wiring that needed getting rid of and gave it a quick scan earlier i now have the 01276 - ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64) 16-00 - Signal  Outside Specification.  so good job ordered a unit now then, hopefully it cures the handbrake and abs warning lights and i can fit the replacement airbag/abs light unit without fear it will burn the bulb out  :lipsrsealed: will be happy once that's all sorted out, mechanically all is all but sorted just bodywork to tidy up now etc Things progressing well in the time of my ownership, well that's all for the time being....

Been abit busy this week, ordered a few parts and most have arrived waiting for a standard gti rear backbox now to replace the powerflow one,abs ecu fitted and still no joy so will require some more looking into  now have two spare ecu's  so might attempt to pull the lid off the original and have a look at that one, decided i would replace the standard gearknob & new gaitor for a mk4 item, also the steering wheel for a much better looking polo 6n2 one  well both items are now fitted :afro: well happy with them tbh,oh and will get round to fitting a new cam cover gasket as i picked this up earlier today seeings as the old one has seen better days!,once the standard box arrives and i get it fitted i'll post some pics up,for now will post some of the new additions

cheers bud :afro: nice steering wheel  no problems really tbh straight forward enough i got mine lined up first time when i tried it down the road  i just left the airbag off (so as to make it easier to undo the nut again if needed to re-position) once happy connect the horn and airbag (disconnect batt - terminal before you start removing old one and fitting new) point to note........you will get an airbag warning light lit permanent if you have it disconnected as it brings a fault up on vag-com i just cleared the code and light went out and comes on with ignition as self test and goes out after 5 secs or so

Bit of an update.....

Waiting for my standard backbox to arrive yet again courier firm have managed to fcuk up twice in one week
so that job will have to wait until the weekend as its due early this week  :lipsrsealed: so onto my abs and handbrake warning light issues, fitted a new near side rear sensor on saturday as vag-com showed to be faulty after i had swapped over ecu's i also took my unit apart and soldered the required connections (so now have a working spare) and a complete abs pump/ecu unit spare  well i hoped the new rear sensor would sort the fault,as the old one was cracked and split.....

Well cleared the fault code and then it highlighted the off side rear was now at fault  but the handbrake warning light now went out so happy there,so i decided i might aswell fit a new offside rear too waited until this morning and rang the local eurocarparts who had one in stock so popped over and picked that up and got it fitted, old one was not the best condition either,so all back together and fitted my replacement airbag/abs unit finally and went for a quick roadtest.........result 15mph and the abs light finally goes out, check on vag-com and cleared the old fault code and all good...

Well my standard backbox turned up yesterday at last!,had a quick look underneath to see whats what  and seems that its a full system from the cat-back and removing just the back box the standard box pipe won't align/join the aftermarket pipework so had a look around at removing and fitting a standard set-up,more expense really  and is it worth it? the powerflow system isn't to bad and looks half decent now i have cleaned up and polished the pipes ,also going to get round to removing and re-fitting the front grille this week and was going to remove the front badge to paint as its a little tatty looking, after abit of a re think i have decided i want to carbon wrap it now instead so ordered some today, pics to follow after my attempt at wrapping

front grille badge left to wrap then decide if i want anymore parts wrapped as i don't want it to be overkill,so for now the cd player surround and the dashboard speaker grilles have been wrapped

Was after a fischer cd storage unit as i thought it looks good fitted in the centre console from the ones i have seen in some mk3's,so placed a bid on one on the old e-bay and won it  well it arrived this morning so seemed like a good idea to get it fitted so i did just that, also been over to the local dvla office to get my personal plate sorted as all the paper work arrived last weekend and finally i could get my plates and the 'wolfsburg' surrounds fitted instead of collecting dust  only bad thing is i'm still waiting for my bonnet lifters to arrive  not a clue when they may turn up but better be soon or i shall look for some somewhere else  happy with the cd unit and now my plates are at last on :afro: so thought i would get some pics up.....

Now with its fischer cd storage in place...

Found my original front doorcards the other day stored in the garage  had a look at them and decided i would take out the vr6 ones as drivers side is looking tatty, also found some oem speaker grilles that i was given with the car so good idea to re-fix my speakers better plus make them look oem at the same time,so cleaned up the original cards and they came up well so i got round to fitting them today  still my bonnet lifters i ordered hadn't shown up during the week so i cancelled the order and ordered from somewhere else well they arrived this morning :afro: so seemed a good idea to fit them makes easier access under the bonnet with the original stay removed and opening/closing is better nice little mod  as usual took one or two pics...

Doorcards as they were..

Both the bumpers arrived today  had a quick look at them both and they look in decent condition for their age so should look better than the original ones that have a few dings and scuff/scrapes in the plastic and paint,i decided that replacing the plastic trims and painting them both would be more expensive in the long run i got the both for £60 delivered, plan now is to give them a good wash and then polish and wax the painted sections and re-apply another red pinstripe and then give the faded plastics some 'black wow' treatment :afro: will get some before and after pics  hopefully they should be fitted this weekend,oh and a little bonus whilst having a look at the front one i noticed a small sensor fixed in the drivers lower trim section so i assumed this to be the sensor for the mfa's outside temperature display i noticed mine does not display one! so had a closer look at mine and lo and behold the sensors missing  so will hopefully find the multi-plug connector for it when i pull the bumper off  be nice if i get that sorted too :afro: pics to follow in due course,,,,,

So with both bumpers to fit i thought i best get them washed and polished/waxed first off so yesterday evening before work seemed a good as time as any so the work began......

Bumpers as unwrapped....
(http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr22/mjwvag20vt/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/WP_20130530_001.jpg) (http://s466.photobucket.com/user/mjwvag20vt/media/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/WP_20130530_001.jpg.html)

Time for a wash and clean....
(http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr22/mjwvag20vt/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/WP_20130531_003.jpg) (http://s466.photobucket.com/user/mjwvag20vt/media/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/WP_20130531_003.jpg.html)

With the bumpers all washed i decided to try and locate the missing temperature display sensor plug
so after a quick look round i could see no plug  :undecided:
had another look and then.....came across two wires with tape round  assuming this could be the wires time to test so put the wires onto the sensor wire prongs and result got a reading on the mfa display :afro: having no multiplug etc i decided i would have to adapt something so searched around my car bits and came across some wire and connectors etc and made my self a loom up so as to get it up and working also a free fix really to

Well time for a little update i think.....well my vr6 front splitter arrived and has been fitted its a non oem item but looks fine only issue was that after fitting the two ends wanted to flip out the locating lugs  sorted that issue with a self tapper into the bumper either side and thats cured it :afro:,the carbon wrapped front grille isn't going to happen seem's like its never been posted since i won it  :undecided: over two weeks ago so have decided i want a refund and will leave the grille oem apart from its carbon wrapped vw badge, also ordered a steering wheel badge last about the same time and it never turned up  p!ssed off to say the least!! so after a refund i ordered a replacement last week and that turned up yesterday so thats fitted and now my little steering wheel change is done, something abit different but looks oem too i decided that i liked the idea of the mkiv keyfob too  so got a fob and modded my key to fit but after it was done i decided it wasn't great so ended up having a normal key cut  but found something on the internet about mk3 blanks so i ended up ordering a mk3 key blank from the usa which arrived today  this needs cutting and is already produced to fit into the mk4 fob without modding your existing key so will get another fob and give this another try so thats pretty much what's been happening to the golf also as the weathers been better i gave it a good wash and finally managed to get some tyre trim applied further ahead it needs an m.o.t early july so fingers crossed on that and i'm going to change the cam-belt and tensioner and replace the sump/gasket also hoping to get time to sort some paint/bodywork if i have a chance, taken a few pics along the way so will add these......oh and you might notice the carbon wrapped speaker grilles have gone back to standard as has the headunit surround this was mainly a little trial of mine but have decided against it and prefer it more o.e.m looking which isn't a bad thing after all.....

Looks like i'll be booking the golf in for its m.o.t for one morning next week  :lipsrsealed: so i'm hoping it gets through also i have been really fcked about with the carbon wrapped front grille i won so decided feck it i will get my money back i'll just keep my carbon wrapped badge and the grille can stay o.e.m as i think it doesn't look to bad so my thoughts turn to 'anni clocks'  i think they look spot on and will be a pleasant addition to the interior :afro: managed to get my mk4 keyfob sorted  and all working so thought i would put a couple of pics up i'm planning on putting my alarm/imobilliser internals into the fob but thats just in planning at the moment.

My Mk4 Key Fob....

Well it didn't take me long to come across some 8v 'anni clocks' all thanks to willz94 who speedily despatched a set he had to me which arrived yesterday big thanks again for them mate :afro: Well i planned to fit them saturday morning but ended up making a start on friday night unfortunately for me when i unpacked them i discovered that the lense had a crack down the middle courtesy of the royal mail cheers   well i opted to fit them and see how they looked once in place i thought initially mmmmm not so bad i could live with it,so job done or i thought it was as during saturday i decided nah not happy what to do  :undecided: so looking for an idea i came across a post from  dom069 in the mk3 section, had a good read and looked through the pics and saw that there was a link also for another mod  a closer look i realised his cluster looked like my original so knowing what could be done this morning i removed the anni clocks and took my originals apart (lense on mine is spot on) then took a deep breath and swapped the anni stuff into my original cluster case and got it all set up for oil and service mileage and best thing to no need to take it in and have any mileage correction done as its my original mileage  and this has saved me £80 too so it was more than worth doing the job and it still looks o.e.m i really like how they look compared to the original black faced and white needles  so as usual have a few pics....(night one not as clear due to my phone but are much brighter than the pic shows)....

Soooo M.o.t. yesterday and well it failed not as bad as i thought tho  :undecided: i was aware off one of the items but i knew i wouldn't get that passed  seems the previous owner or owners have crushed the front jacking points both o/s and n/s front  so they need new inner sills also failed on corrosion on some of the brake pipes that's pretty much it tbh other than that the tester commented how tidy it was and the condition for its age  :smug: so i'll be dropping it off at the garage on monday morning for the sills to be welded in and the brake pipes replaced been told it'll be about £200 so i suppose once that's all done and i keep looking after it i should get a few more years out of it saves it from being scrapped :afro: just need's some job's doing too on my two weeks off and i may set about sorting some of the bodywork issues if not then they will get done as and when really...

Current Job's To Do Are :

Replace the sump gasket (leakage evident so be a good chance to get this done)
Change the oil and filter also (might as well as the sump's coming off)
Replace timing belt and tensioner
Clean the throttlebody assembly
Replace the gasket on the coolant outlet on the cylinder head i noticed a very slight trace of coolant the other day so whilst i drain it past the head may as well clean the throttle body at the same time)
Then clean the inlet manifold heatshield and all around the bottom of the engine  might stop oil spots appearing on the drive and garage floor

Thinking about a lower glovebox assembly also as i like how they look compared to the shelf in mine just need to find one now, other stuff can wait as i'll be keeping the mk3 for awhile yet.

Well the golf finally got a new m.o.t. certificate :afro: picked it from the garage earlier and also my highline lower glovebox arrived today, was expecting it to be a black coloured one as thats what was stated on the sellers advert but i didn't mind that was a nice suprise when i opened it that its the blue colour so matches my trim nicely too gave it a clean and cleaned up some bits in the interior and got it fitted in finishes that side of the dash much better imo than the original shelf no modding needed either as its the one for the air-con model, happy with it for the £17 i paid its in vgc too.
Will be getting the other bits i plan to change and sort during the next week and get that all done during my hols :afro:

Lower Glovebox Now Installed....

Dropped the golf off this morning at the garage for them to sort the sills both sides as they ran out of time on tuesday, went and picked it up earlier and apparently it wasn't as bad as first thought  mainly the jacking points well lack of them but there all sorted now and sealed so all good and as an added bonus the total job for the m.o.t. work came to £135 alot less than the £200 quoted :afro: not to bad to get it through the m.o.t so hopefully next year should be better ,also today my bmw series one rear wiper arm, blade and cap arrived so this is now fitted along with the bmw modded cap for the water spray looks cleaner than the original fit one too a worthy little upgrade/mod using the bmw wiper blade for now but will probably end up gettting the mk5 aero blade and adapting it to fit the bmw arm as others have also done so some pics of the latest addition,,,,,,,

Got my list together for parts that i will be sorting out during my hols  also added is a new coolant flange  as i noticed tonight mine has a slight leak so seems wise to replace the whole lot really so another job to do also tonight i decided i didn't like the look of the aftermarket high level brake light a previous owner had fitted so i set to and removed it,i think the rear screen looks alot better without it :afro: no pics yet but no doubt i'll post some on here as soon as....

Also annoyingly this week the airbag warning light has decided to come on and stay on  quick check on vag-com and this is the fault :-  00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95): Resistance too High
So started off having a look at the slip ring etc all seems okay so reset and cleared the code and light out  then first thing in the morning driving out onto the main road and the fcucking lights on again so had a look at info regarding airbag bypass using a resistor so deciding i didn't want to go down the route of getting other parts i decided i would disconnect the airbag and use a resistor to trick the ecu into thinking its connected thus putting the light out after its self test :afro: also was getting fed up seeing that airbag light lit every time i drove it so today i went and brought three resistors of different values disconnected the airbag plugs and taped up the connector from the steering airbag and fitted a 3.3ohm 0.25w into the connector plug sealed all up to prevent any mishaps, cleared the 00588 code and bingo ignition on airbag light on for 3-4 secs and then goes out result!!
Also been and picked up a sump gasket and timing belt & tensioner kit (non o.e.m) as well as an o.e.m coolant outlet and required parts along with another oil filter and engine oil will be doing these jobs in the next two weeks and trying to attempt to clean up some of the engine bay at this time too, also need to fit another cam cover again as i have noticed a slight weep from mine  should keep me busy at least but hopefully coolant/oil leak free  :lipsrsealed:

Decided today i would remove the throttle body and give it a good clean out as well as clean up some oil/dirt/coolant leakage from around the cylinder head and block/gearbox areas, also to fit the new coolant outlet as the coolant needed to be drained below the head anyway would be saving the G13 coolant as its not been put it that long ago so  got myself a container to fit under the outlet and pulled the radiator top hose off as well as disconnecting the other pipes and multi-plug for the ect sensor and after removing the outlet and wiping it i soon found the cause of the slight leakage  both sealing faces adjacent to the bolt holes had cracked and had further cracked into the plastic housing so glad i decided to fit a new replacement :afro:

Old Housing (Cracks not that clear on sealing face due to phone cam)

Much happier with all the work done coolant filled and system bled of air and all good engine seems to run better and idles much smoother too :afro: both jobs plus the other job yesterday have made it a productive couple of days i suspect due to the original state/condition of the throttle body that this hadn't ever seen a clean out in a very long time if at all  looks like a past owner had overtightened the two coolant housing bolts at some time to mask or attempt to fix the slight leak thus causing the cracking that and ageing plastic i imagine so sump gasket and oil and filter change to do and see if i can clean some of the underneath up too oh an cam-belt/tensioner to fit 2 jobs done 2 still to be done......

Another productive day today set to and dropped the engine oil and sump/oil filter and removed the rather oily looking sump gave me the chance to give the gearbox, driveshafts and other oily parts a good wipe and clean so they are now oil free!!  decided i might as well give the sump a good wash out interior and exterior gave me a good opportunity to have a look at the condition of the sump, was a suprise to find it clean just a small piece of plastic found in the oil no sign of any bearing debris etc,oil pick up pipe gauze was also debris free too and looking over the bottom end etc revealed its in a good condition also :afro: with everything cleaned up it was just a case of putting everything back together, new o.e.m oil filter fitted and filled with vw platinum semi-synthetic 5w/40 oil (car seems to run well with this),also fitted an o.e.m cam cover gasket and condition of the cylinder head/valve train is also in a good general condition to not bad for an engine with just over 161.600 miles  testament to original vw build quality i feel so i shall keep on with regular (3-4,000mile) oil & filter changes hopefully no more oil drips on the drive now   with most of the mechanical side of the work done attention to the body work and alloys is the next things to get sorted out, last job mechanical wise is the cam-belt/tensioner which i'm hoping to get fitted later this week, didn't take many pics of the work done today as my phone decided to throw a fit  so here's the one or two i managed to get....

Today i finally got the cambelt and tensioner replaced, although both were in decent condition i just felt the need to replace it myself then i know exactly what's been done, really enjoy working on the 2.0lt engine plenty of space and accessability and easy to work with the cambelt change has to be one of the easiest i have done can't beat the older stuff less hassle (in theory  :lipsrsealed:) than the newer engines of today  so now the mechanical side of the golf is now finished! also decided that i'm not to keen on the chrome door pins that came on the golf so i ordered up some o.e.m standard black ones from vw (should have by saturday),i plan to cut them down so that when locked the end of the pin sits flush with the top of the door card should look better...

Some Pics From Today's Work....

Realised after seeing the mk3 interior door pins that they are different to the mk4  and getting them flush to the doorcard wasn't an option without some modification so i settled for cutting the plastic pins down and taking a small piece off the threaded lock rods  five minutes work and got them where i wanted to be when locked much better o.e.m than the aftermarket ones that were fitted....

Pretty much all for now with it unless i decide to start with some bodywork/paint jobs but no rush

Not much has happened since i got all my main jobs finished but the other day it decided to let me down  car suddenly slowed up and stopped on me so after failing to start i had a quick look under the bonnet and soon found the cause the king ht lead was laid across the coolant pipes and the end melted  felt the coil pack and it was red hot so i pushed the lead back onto the coil and it seemed a little loose so i'm assuming for some reason or another it just fell out  with that done i limped home and rang up my local motor factors and they promptly ordered me a full set of ignition leads,as well as a new coil pack, got those picked up and replaced the old set and also had to fasten the coil pack to the bulkhead fixings properly as due to a past owner it was only located with one bolt  so new coil pack and leads done now so that's pretty much all the ignition side now replaced and since fitting the cars 100% better so was worth the expense of replacing especially with winter approaching best to fail now rather than later

(http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr22/mjwvag20vt/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/WP_20130806_001.jpg) (http://s466.photobucket.com/user/mjwvag20vt/media/Mk3%20Golf%20GTi/WP_20130806_001.jpg.html)

Also i decided that i liked how my mk4 had the little alarm led near the door pin so i had the idea of wiring one into my aftermarket alarm/immobiliser easy enough but not so easy to locate the mk4 led tho  :undecided: but the other day one appeared on e-bay for not much money so i snapped it up and once it arrived modded the original mk4 one to fit into my mk3 one easy enough just a case of carefully getting the led and wiring out,had some wire already anyhow so wired this into the alarm led wiring from the dash and into the drivers door, drill a small hole into the mk3 cap and fixed the led in with some silicone sealer job done, sorted the polarity for the led and put everything back together and all looks oem :afro:

One mk4 alarm led....

Led and wiring carefully removed....

Yet another little fault sorted tonight  found out last night my electric window switch wasn't working,so earlier decided to investigate,i suspected the switch might be faulty but had worked the previous days so i had a look at the door wiring loom/plug and found the cause pretty much straight away  yet another half hearted fix by a previous owner who had kindly decided to just join both the earth and power wires together by twisting them and the earth had pulled away! so i corrected this by fitting some cable connections and joining the bodged wires properly ,resulting with a fully working switch again :afro: whilst sorting this i found two more sets of wires cut and the ends taped over  :undecided: so tried my electric mirror switch and this was inoperative ( clearly has been since i bought it as i have never adjusted the mirrors) so trimmed wiring back and connected them properly and result i now have a working mirror adjuster  another little job sorted out. Also found a small coolant leak from the rear coolant outlet on the cylinder head so assuming this is also going to be cracked wish now i had reolaced it when i fitted a new outlet on the front side of the cylinder head a couple of weeks back oh well  so ordered a new one and o'ring from the dealers as well as a new coolant bottle as i decided to replace this whilst the coolants out as the old ones looking tired, looking to get these fitted at the end of the week.

Finally sorted out these small coolant leaks, replaced the outlet on the rear of the cylinder head and fitted my new coolant expansion bottle (new cap to be fitted when collected from vw),decided i would also add just neat G13 instead of mixing with water as i prefer a 60/40 coolant/water mix  drained some coolant out, quick wipe and clean up of the engine bay then removed the leaking outlet fairly obvious once off that it was due to the sealing o'ring incorrectly seated allowing a small amount to leak out and run down from under the outlet and onto the gearbox, actual outlet was okay no sign of any cracks but i would rather just fit a new one, that done and new coolant bottle fitted fill up with coolant and then the usual stuff in checking everything, all good cant see any tiny spots of coolant on the drive or garage  so another job completed  :whistle:new coolant bottle looks much better now i can actually see the coolant level, took some random pics as usual....

Old Coolant Outlet....

Will be collecting the new cap from vw tomorrow and thats pretty much the coolant side done in terms of plastic housings replaced, some more G13 so prepared now for the winter months hopefully, looks like the bodywork side of things will be waiting until next year as i don't have much time with work etc to get it all sorted but no rush the majority of things needed doing are done and its driveable gotta remember its an old car so can't expect it to look as good as a new one  i'll keep it for now and as i like the mk3's im not ruling out replacing with a 16v or vr6 version

That's about all for now....
