It all depends on your budget, Good condition one now-a-days will set you back quite abit. Plus its good to know which engine you prefer 8V or 16V GTI.

Arm yourself with a buyers guide and have a budget in mind.
-
stick wanted ad's in the wanted section of forums, plus read the classifieds. there are plenty of mk2's for sale and varying scales of the price.
my one tip is buy a GTI based on bodywork. everything else is very easily & cheaply sorted, updated etc. bodywork isnt

i would probably go for a 16v but my budget is £2000 max so i cant really be to picky
-
Good luck with the hunt! Buy on body
-
Add another £500 on that and you can have my freshly painted black 3 door gti.
-
Got any pics? :)

Might take it to ultimate dubs on Sunday for people to have a look around it in person. Will grab some pictures if the weather is good this week.
-
Thanks :)
-
Have you found any you like??
-
A few put most are way out of my price range, hopefully I will find one soon :)
-
Golden rule on buying - Bodywork and plastic trims must be in tip top shape. Mechanicals come last.
Just cosmetic trims can cost as much as a 2nd hand engine.
Drivers seat bolsters ware but another easy fix.
Sagging headliner - Finding an original mint one for a 3 door is not easy these days unless you have £100+
Plenty of buying guides on here. Have a quick search

Should i be looking for a 3dr or 5dr and how much difference is there between the two :)

The difference is one has 4 doors, the other has 2 doors.
It all depends on your own taste which you'd prefer or which will be practical for you. And if you ain't bothered then that will open your choice into finding a better car
-
like for like, a 5dr will be significantly cheaper than 3dr

Balderdash! false rumor spread by those with an excess of 2 doors

You're not too far from me, if i see anything local I'll let you know. I think your biggest issue will probably be insurance though if it's your first car (assuming you've just passed your test). I'd check relative costs on the 8v vs 16v to see if there's any difference there. Also 8v will give you a little better mpg too, which is a big consideration nowadays! Petrol is getting on for double what it cost when I passed, I feel old  Also as others have said you may well find a 5 door cheaper, but (IMO!) 3 door is cooler  Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Thanks I appreciate it, and will do hopefully i will find one soon :D
