Title: Boot lid lock/central locking problem
Post by: moby dick on 05 March 2013, 15:57
Hiya. Central locking on my '90 Gti works fine except the boot lid lock sticks. I was trying to fix this and I removed a part of the mechanism that engages the lock when the central locking system works. It seems to sit between the boot lock and the locking mechanism. Looking at the boot lid when raised its to the right of the brackets for the rear window wiper. I removed it and hey presto its disappeared. Can't find the little thing anywhere. It's the small part that sits above the white T shaped piece of plastic in the photo. Can anyone tell me what part this whole thing is called? I need to source a replacement but without knowing what its called its difficult. Thanks for any help(http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa425/nicdavdi/IMG_0175.jpg)

Thanks but I don't think that's the part I'm missing. It sits above the white t piece and is fixed with a screw. It turns in one dimension forcing the white t piece down which in turn pushes down the wire that unlocks.

Do you mean the L shaped part that pushes & screws on to the back of the lock tumbler ?

Thanks big time, but at least I know what it's called.

This pic clearly shows the part that is missing, are you sure its not still inside the tailgate, as I'm sure its larger than the drainage holes! it also appears that there is still something in the threaded part of the lock..., has the screw sheared off?
when you fix your problem. pay close attention to the T shaped lever arm, the shaft that they sit on can corrode, expanding the plastic, and making it susceptible to break very easily!  Like most of these things, they will last forever if properly lubricated with white grease, and not WD40 which will only wash away the proper grease!

Thomas, thanks and yes that's the offending item alright. I have the screw that holds the piece in place and I have tried to check everywhere in the tailgate and can't find it. I will have another look tomorrow in case it has slipped round the back. It ain't anywhere else.

The tailgates are notorious for having plenty of excess wax protection, it likely that the part has embedded itself into the wax and is stuck, try raising the tailgate, and giving it a good slap, you'll soon be able to hear if its rattling round in there...
