Title: Oil usage
Post by: Snooze on 05 March 2013, 12:35
What are everyone's mk6 gti's like in terms of oil usage? I bought my car in sept 2012 and noticed in Jan of this year that my dipstick only showed my oil level as half full. I've been checking the level once a week since then and topping up where necessary. My mk5 gti was just the same.

hi,
Mine has just had her 3rd birthday and I had to top up only once during that time. This was just a few weeks ago prior to service.

I always seemed to be topping the oil in my mk5GTI but the Mk6,no obvious oil usage,11k miles so far.

Mine is a Sept 2012 GTi and I had the low oil level warning on in Jan this year - so consistent with your experience.  I topped it up and no further warning yet but will be checking the level at the weekend.

Also had to top up coolant in Jan as it had dropped quite a bit.

I've topped mine up twice in nearly 3 years of ownership and tbh it probably would've been fine if i hadn't cos it was only a drop.
However i don't have a particularly heavy foot.

The mk5 is more notorious for oil consumption. How many miles did you do between September and January?

If you are half way between top up and full (1 litre) it sounds fine but please confirm your mileage.

Don't expect VW to be bothered...they quote a consumption of 1 litre in 600 miles as acceptable

I changed from Castrol 5w30/5w40 because my car was devouring it. I now use Redline 5w40, it is dearer but so is constantly pouring oil into an engine...

It's spec is better than Castrol or equivalent and it has halved my oil consumption of which I have tracked for 30000 miles since owning the vehicle.

ED35 took half a litre when 4000 miles old...only 3k after it's checkup service. I imagine it'll need some more again before the next service! As they bed in over their first 10k they tend to get better and seal more effectively.

With regards to coolant, I've found on the plant we used to operate that coolant levels tend to find their own level, and this can sometimes be right on the low level mark, but isn't a problem. If it continues to drop it's worth investigating

3 and a half years old, never had to top up the oil. Checked weekly.

Coolant, on the other hand, it used a fair bit until the water pump was replaced a few weeks ago.

Mine needed topping up at 3.5k miles.   Just coming up to 5k miles now.  Car was brand new in Sept 12.
