Title: Serious overtime.
Post by: Ninja on 04 March 2013, 23:55
So, I'm cramming some serious overtime in at the moment due to the recent split with the mrs. I'd rather be at work than at home...

11-11 yesterday, 8-11 today. (Am to pm). Hoping to get a mortgage within the next 18 months, so that's my motivation. But damn, it's hard.

Anyone else doing silly shifts at work so I don't feel like its just me? Hah.

What do you do?

Overtime so to speak today was sorting some vans and an Audi A8 out in the normal working day then getting called out after hours to go put a mirror on a van (nicked it off my dads van as it was only a month old! get him a replacement tomorrow) that had just been in a fight with a lorry and desperately was needed to go to Birmingham.

Then attempting to sort a gearbox in a bought to sell Clio. I failed somewhat. I think it's the wrong box but I was shattered.

Then stupidly played football but I guess that's not overtime.

I guess not. Heh.

I'm behind the scenes. I guess the best description of my role would be ... 'Improvement leader' for a broadcasting company. Overtime is great when its available, and at the moment it is. So I'm doing as much as possible.

Don't do too much unless your DIVORCE is settled... It could bite you on the arse if you earn too much money!!

Been doing long days last week on the mines. 5 hours driving to get to site then start at 4am and finish at 7pm for 3 days then a 7 hour drive back due to back weather.

Only done 2 hours today but off on site again tomorrow to Saturday, this ones only 3 hours drive away two long days and drive back on Saturday.

Some weeks Ive only worked 10 hours (paid 38) and others am working 80+ body clock is all over the place.

I get overtime, but they don't offer anywhere near enough of it.  Only got 3.5 hours this month which is pathetic

I do some overtime but I'm on salary... the problem with my job though is that it is in design and you never properly switch off. Just bought a galaxy note 2 to get ideas down whilst on the go i.e. when Im not at work.

No rest for a business owner

How true... I was up til 4am this morning working...

Even though I've got a number of staff under my belt - as the company continues to grow, my workload just proportionately increases. Its relentless.

I had visions of me doing nothing a few years into this; if anything, I now do more!

Retirement by 30; that's my goal. So I hope this is worth it.

Why I don't want to have a big business. Would be nice to have a partnership but the last one I had failed. Failed because other partner didn't like me earning money outside business times. Shame but was a good thing.

Would like to get busy and take on a lad or two.

problem with takeing people on is they have a nasty habbit of causeing more work than they actualy do. sometimes it easyer just to do it yourself.

How very true & if you do find someone good they upsticks and leave you in the sh1te...

I used to employ 5 people... Never again.. It's such a hassle with PAYE, wages, NI & if they are crap it's such a hassle to get shut of them..

Hmm. I've got my eye on a lad doing shifts as an apprentice.  Maybe use him as a subcontractor when I need a hand etc.

its hard to balance work and family life sometimes with the need for money for everything and 3 kids,(i know my fault but didnt have a telly lol).my mrs has her own nail business and at the minute she has got enough days in the week let alone hrs in a day ,as it stands im actually turning down o/t as shes fully booked for next couple of months ,good position to be in i know but have told her to slow down a bit as she loves what she does ,BUT told her if shes does to much she may lose that passion and js becomes work

Amen to that! Being my own boss is pretty awesome, means I can pick and choose the hours within reason. I can get up with the little one in the morning, take her to nursery, do a but whilst she's there, then pick her up in the afternoon an do stuff. Perfect!

Only side effect is I work most weekends, and it's not uncommon for me to be running pay roll or working on quotes at 3am!

All worth it though.
