Hi, I thought Id join up as this golf is driving me wild and need some input by anyone who's had the same problem!
Firstly, the battery is fine and it recently had a new coil pack due to it blowing the last time this happened.
Let me explain the best I can :)
The car is fitted with an aftermarket immobilizer (No idea what make, a plug and play one). Normally to start the car you firstly remove the immobilizer then put the key in, turn and boom she starts!
But now, you put the key in, turn it, there's no cranking. All the lights on the dash flash frantically and the engine doesnt turn. Unlike the last time this happened I can finally start her after a LOT of throttle and waiting to hear her try and turn.
The stange thing being if once you've got her started and you remove the key and keep starting her from stop over and over it eventually gets easier? Could it be a sticky relay?
Crankshaft sensor has recently been replaced as that was the original fault (Reading around here I see thats a common problem on this model)
Any input would be great, Im a level 3 qualified mechanic but this has me & my fellow college buddies completely stumped lol!!

Ignition switches on these are prone to failing, I'd say 99% thats your problem. About £5 for a new one.

Also, its easier to do by removing the whole steering column

Thanks :) forgot to mention she'll start first time with a jump, would that still be the ignition switch?

Yeah, the next time it refuses to start. Try wiggling the key, it should start if the ignition switch is faulty

Is your battery decent??

Is your battery decent??
or the starter motor?

Battery perfectly fine, and the starter as that was checked last time it went to the garage

What caused this problem was lending the car to my otherhalf, who decided he would turn it to ignition, then plug in the immobiliser! Garage has advisedtaking the positive off and trying to wipe the immobiliser codes

I very much doubt it that would be the problem, The job of the immoboliser is to stop car from cranking over. But yeah you could try to leave it for 30 mins or so and see if that helps.

Just tried taking the positive off, left for half a hour. Still no crank, will always start though when jumped

Also I've been wiggling the key like crazy, nothing :( its getting a bit embarrassing having to ask everyone to come jump me when I turn the engine off lol!

Does you car have aircon? I'm pretty sure I were Reading a thread on here, his car had same problem like yours, when jumped, it started, otherwise it wouldn't crank over. At the end he figures the fault leading to jammed aircon pulley. Maybe you have this problem if you have aircon :undecided:
