This time last year I bought a mk3 gti as my project, from a background with a keen interest in cars but no real mechanical knowledge. After getting the mk3 where I wanted her with a lot of help from friends etc. I sold her as my girlfriend and I bought a house.
However after 3-4 months without I am desperate for another project/toy and whatever I look at I keep coming back to the VW's. At the grand old age of 20 and with this being a second car I have been looking at the smaller engines due to insurance. My options are mk2 polo, mk3 polo coupe or a MK2 GOLF.
I came across this mk2 golf at a breakers yard (has not been declared scrap and selling whole and has not been broken at all), which leads me to my question is this worth it?:
MK2 1989 1.3
5 door
121K
Hardly any rust from what I can see
No Tax or Test
Been stood for a few months
Few dings on wings and doors
Inside is immaculate
Havent heard it run yet but apparantley does (would check this before buying)
With it being at a breakers yard I or they dont know if anything is wrong with it.
Plenty of potential with cheap insurance but will need a lot of work and time
Is it worth £350??
If this was a mk3 I would have said hell no, but not sure with it being a mk2 and would really appreciate your opinions. The pics below makes the paint work look horrible but it is just very grimey as been sat for months.

Hi, £350 seems a little steep to me for what it is. I've recently bought my 1st MK2 a gti 8v with mot till oct and tax till end of may for £410 off good old ebay. Its a cosmetically challanged 3dr with no history and 160k on the clock but ive done a cambelt and service, replaced the clutch cable, relplaced a rear bearing and after 2 months ive had no running issues at all, its starts every morning and gets me to and from work.
I read another post on here where someone bought a 5dr gti for £350 so for the same money that 1.3 with no mot or tax seems overpriced.
Hope that helps.

£476?

Thats a nice car for the money, shame its not for sale!

OP...
£350.00 sounds a fair ish deal to me...
It's worth about trice that in parts, after you've bought it and don't like it.. (assuming the interior is as nice as you say...) BUT only if you put the work in to selling them.
I would take a punt at it... it's only £350.00 at the end of they and you won't loose on it - IMO

I would lose sleep if I paid more than £60 for it

Decided against it, picked up a VW Polo Coupe on the bay. Picking it up this Sat
Viewing it, it is a very tidy rust free car with plenty of years left in it.
One problem is that I cant find a good polo forum (well as good as this one anyway)
