Title: mk4 1.8 Turbo Gti. Turbo question?
Post by: Sonic B0000M on 03 March 2013, 02:02
Just got a GTi. Its 2001 51 plate.  Which turbo is it? I heard there is a better one around my year?

More than likely you are running the AUM engine code, which has the k03s, which is the better turbo, and you have variable valve timing, which when mapping releases extra ponies!

If you cant find out your engine code, probably the easiest most noticeable difference is if you look under the bonnet to see if you can see the throttle cable, if you cant see one, you are most likely running electronic throttle, which the AUM and above engines do. If you do see a throttle cable, you are running an AGU engine code, which has the k03 turbo

Hope this helps :)

ARZ is also drive by wire (no cable) and was in golfs around 2000-2001. These engines have the older K03 turbo but supposedly have stronger internals than AUM/ AUQ.

Take off your engine cover and look at the tag on the block your engine code will be etched into it.

At that age (late 2001) it should be a aum as They only made the arz for about 6 months in 2000 but some weren't sold untill 2001
Te aum has the k03s and as said vvt which is good.
The arz and aum/auq have exactly the same internals.

Agu has large port head which I the main bonus of the old engine but on all the engine the rods are the weak points!

no need to get your hands dirty playing in the engine bay. go to the boot lift the carpet up on the left hand side there will be a sticker. and givesw you all the data you need. :D engine code colour ect ect.

I thought that the AGU and ARZ had forged cranks which the later engines didn't have?

The agu and bam have a forged crank but it is irrelevant unless your hitting silly numbers like 800bhp!
Never heard of a cast 1.8t crank snapping on any of the high powered cars.

How much quicker is the s? And exactly how much quickerbis remap to say 200bhp? What's the 0-60 like. ?

Standard they are pretty much the same (s has a bit more low down torque I think...bits it's minimal)
K03 will map to around 180-190
K03s will map to 200-210 or with mods upto around 235+ depending on mods

Having a map makes a massive differnece! Totally transforms the car and is the best things around in my eyes!

Fair enough, it's good to know. I was just going off what I'd read before buying it. Internet hey? allows you to be informed and wrong at the same time.

The problem with the Internet as its like Chinese whispers things get spread and exaggerated
For example why does a bam engine cost around £1000 when you can pick up a aum for £350 (both without turbos)
Because apparently the bam is "better" because it has 225bhp when realistically they are pretty much the same and its the same with the auq.

Something I think is called scene tax...

Yeah scene tax is rediculous and generally makes things seem to cost a bomb for the mk4.
